We loved the all-new Fiat Grande Panda when we drove the electric version earlier this year, but we were keen to know whether there would be a 4x4 Panda available in the future. Fast forward to now and the chances are looking good. Fiat has just revealed a Grande Panda 4x4 concept which we hope is a sign of things to come.
Unveiled at the international test drives for the Grande Panda hybrid, the 4x4 concept made a splash with its dark red paint job, cream steel wheels, roof rack, and additional pixel lights. It is clear Fiat has leaned on its heritage and taken inspiration from the burgundy red Panda 4x4 Sisley limited edition of the late 1980s. Fiat was very tight lipped about when and if the Grande Panda 4x4 might go into production, but the head of Fiat for Europe, Gaetano Thorel, said “We knew everyone would love it, we have to do it” yet he wouldn’t commit to any specifics. Another unknown is what powertrain the 4x4 might use. Fiat does say the concept features an “electrified innovative rear axle” so it could end up being a mild hybrid like the one used in the Jeep Avenger 4xe, but Fiat appears to be keeping its options open. What is clear, though, is the Grande Panda 4x4 looks very cool. Whether the appeal will be strong enough to translate into sales is something Fiat will be weighing up carefully before putting it into production.
