Sustainability is one of the hot topics in the car industry right now, and drivers are more and more engaged and keen to support brands who take it seriously. It’s a topic we look at on a monthly basis in our Sustainability Newsletter, celebrating the brands doing it well, exploring the latest developments in battery tech and looking at the bigger picture of raw materials, supply chains and more. Suffice to say, this is about more than having a bit of recycled plastic trim on the dashboard and calling yourself eco-friendly.
Good to see British-based brands like JLR and Vauxhall doing well here as well, the latter to be celebrated for its ‘Electric Streets’ campaign opening up EV ownership to the significant number of potential buyers who feel excluded for the fact they don’t have off-street parking at home to install their own charger. But our winner this year is Renault, a brand on a roll in terms of its products but also in making sure they are built and used in as sustainable a manner as possible. “Renault has clearly signalled its sustainability intentions with the Renault Emblème, a unique concept that will emit just five tonnes of CO2 in its lifetime thanks to a focus on sustainable ultra efficiency,” says Autotrader Editorial Director and sustainability advocate Erin Baker. “Our judges from The Carbon Literacy Project stated ‘This initiative is a clear demonstration of Renault's understanding of what is required from the industry to achieve the necessary decarbonisation. Every aspect of the design of Emblème has been considered with circularity and sustainability at heart. This development sets a precedent for the industry and a clear pathway for the future.’” Bravo, Renault. Return to the New Car Awards homepage
