Monterey Car Week is an exclusive annual festival in California celebrating the very finest things automotive and an increasingly important opportunity for manufacturers to reveal their most hotly anticipated new models. This year at one of the world’s glitziest garden parties, The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering, Pagani is taking the opportunity to reveal the Utopia Roadster.
Designed alongside its coupe counterpart, the Utopia Roadster weighs the same 1,280 kg, so there’s no extra bulk to compromise performance. This is achieved by using over forty composite materials in addition to carbon fibre to keep it as light as possible. It’s powered by a specially tuned, twin-turbo V12 engine manufactured by Mercedes-AMG producing 864 horsepower with each engine assembled by an individual craftsperson. Unlike many new supercars such as the Lamborghini Revuelto there’s no hybrid system and Pagini promises it will be smooth and effortless to drive in all conditions. This will be helped by carefully designed active suspension combining electronics with light-weight materials. Pagini has also paired up with Pirelli so the Utopia Roadster will be running on custom-made tyres fitted with sensors sending information about the road surface back to the on-board computer.
The blend of modern technology with tradition is a theme throughout the car. Its unashamedly “old-school” vibe highlighted by the seven-speed manual gear box and other physical switches designed to make the driving experience immersive and engaging. As ever, beauty is a subjective quality, but the Utopia Roadster certainly looks exquisite to our eyes. With theatrical butterfly doors, bespoke interior and the distinctive Pagani styling cues including the central four exhaust pipes at the rear.
The car comes with a removeable hardtop which Pagani suggests you display like a sculpture on a stand when not in use. In addition, the Utopia Roadster comes with a soft top which rolls up into bespoke holdall to be stored behind the two seats, like a very fancy awning. Pagani says this gives you three cars in one, and presumably no Pagani owner will need to worry about wrestling the roof into a bag themselves. The Utopia Roadster also comes with a specially crafted luggage set, with two suitcases made of the finest leather to fit beside the engine and two additional bags to slot behind the headrests.
Only 130 Utopia Roadsters will be built and with so many customisation options available each one will be unique. Even with a starting price of €3.1 million, we expect them to sell out quickly. The car on display in California will be finished in Habanero Red, a shade designed to look sporty during the day and elegant at night as the light changes. It will also feature a Sports Pack, with light-weight seats, a titanium exhaust, and special wheels to help cool the brakes.

Displayed alongside the Utopia at the Pagani stand will be additional roadsters. The Zonda Arrivederci is the last road-going Zonda to be built and it will be shown beside a Huayra Roadster, a car with all mechanical parts visible. There will also be the finely tuned Huayra Roaster BC and a Imola Roadster, one of only eight ever made. Each car will take part in a parade during the “Exotics On Broadway” event towards the end of Monterey Car Week.
