What is ULEZ?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone, commonly known as ULEZ, is an area of London in which polluting vehicles that do not meet specific emissions standards are charged a fee for driving through. ULEZ was introduced to help reduce air pollution and encourage the uptake of cleaner, greener vehicles.

ULEZ charges always apply (except for Christmas Day), and non-compliant vehicles driving through ULEZ are charged £12.50 per day.

To help drivers find a new, ULEZ-compliant vehicle, the ULEZ scrappage scheme offers a discount ranging from £1,000 – £11,500 when you scrap your old vehicle for a compliant one. This scrappage scheme is offered by Transport for London (TfL) to help London residents and businesses. To further help the Londoners affected by the expansion of ULEZ, the eligibility of this scrappage scheme is changing from 21 August 2023 so that all residents can apply and benefit from this scheme. Which cars don’t have to pay a fee in the ULEZ?

Accepted Answer

All vehicles that meet ULEZ emissions standards are free to drive in the ULEZ without any charges. All fully-electric cars are ULEZ-compliant as they don’t produce any tailpipe emissions. All diesel and diesel hybrid cars that meet Euro 6 standards and are registered new from September 2015 or later are considered ULEZ-compliant. All petrol and petrol hybrid cars that are Euro 4 or above emissions standards and are registered new from January 2006 or later are considered ULEZ-compliant.
