Audi may have ceased production of the R8, but that legacy lives on. In this video Rory relives the story, moving through the generations, to remind us why the R8 remains so iconic. Taking three of the most memorable R8s for a day out on the track, Rory unpicks why Audi chose to build this mid-engined supercar, what it got so right, and which version was best.
Starting with the R8’s last hurrah, the V10 GT RWD special edition. Exclusive, expensive, and exceptionally powerful, a fitting way to conclude almost two decades of the R8. It didn’t completely stick to the status quo, forgoing the famed Audi Quattro four-wheel drive system in favour of rear-wheel drive, signified by its RWD designation. Corners are all the more fun for it. As Rory slides round the track, it’s time to delve deeper into how it all came to be.
Audi launched the R8 in 2006. The design was based on the Le Mans concept car first revealed in 2003 and it also had a strong resemblance to the RSQ concept car featured in the film ‘I, Robot’. Futuristic yet timeless, even nearly two decades later the first R8 still looks modern. Pairing a manual gearbox with a V8 engine, the R8 started as it meant to go on with a joyous driving experience. This was helped because, although a four-wheel drive Audi Quattro, the rear wheels receive the most power.
The R8 later got a facelift, it still used the Quattro system and was treated to a larger V10 engine. This upped the power and, as Rory finds out, increased the fun factor with it. With build quality that stands the test of time, racing technology, and fantastic handling, could this be the pick of the bunch?
After putting each R8 through its paces it’s time to get down to business. Is the newest car always best? There is only one way to decide - a drag race. You’ll have to watch to the end to find out which car wins.
