Audi has released two electric concept cars – the A6 e-Tron fastback and the A6 Avant e-Tron estate. It’s rumoured that Audi’s Performance models, the RS6 and RS7 could borrow heavily from these designs in the future.

Audi A6 e-Tron at a glance

• Range: 435 miles
• 0-62mph in less than four seconds • 5% to 80% recharge in under 25 minutes Audi is looking to fight off the rivalling cars with the concept cars - Mercedes’ EQS and Tesla’s Model S on two fronts: performance and features. Let’s quickly compare the three vehicles: The Mercedes EQS which has a range of up to 484 miles wltp while the Tesla Model S which has a range between 367 and 379 miles depending on the model. The A6 e-Tron is much more powerful than the Mercedes EQS’s ability to do 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds while it’s quite close to Tesla Model S Long Range’s acceleration from 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds.

Design

Even in the concept stage, two main design features stand out in the e-Tron:
Firstly, Audi has revolutionised their famous design theme with the new, grille-less, single frame front and skinny headlights that allow the driver to choose a pattern of their own choice, as well as use the headlights as a projector to play games or watch a movie. Secondly, the body style of the e-Tron and e-Tron Avant is neither an SUV nor a crossover, yet the cars are about the same size as a fastback. This stand-out design also makes it pretty spacious inside, with ample headroom and decent boot space.

Safety

The A6 e-Tron comes with four projectors on each corner of the car that can project images on the floor to indicate the car’s about to turn – this feature isn’t road legal yet in the UK but it’s quite popular in the German market and it’s a cool feature that could come into play at some point in the real world. The rivalling Mercedes EQS comes with a similar safety feature.
The car also has high-resolution projectors built on each side to warn other road users such as cyclists and pedestrians that the doors are about to open using light effects projected on the ground. The headlights are active matrix – they have been designed as such so that they can project a full beam on the road ahead without dazzling other road users. Sold on an Audi electric car?
