British bike builder CCM has made a name for itself in recent times with a range of beautifully finished hipster-friendly street bikes spun off the original Spitfire of 2017. With its combination of a thumping 600cc single-cylinder engine, tubular steel frame and unique modern-retro aesthetic, the Spitfire has since spawned an entire line-up of roadster, bobber, scrambler, flat track and super moto inspired machines, all finished with the same incredible attention to detail and boutique style.
Those with longer memories, though, will remember CCM as an off-road brand, with a history of motocross, trials and enduro machines honed in the heat of competition. Its latest bike, launching at Motorcycle Live under the working title of ‘Project X’ combines both traditions, with a “dual sport” off-road twist on the brand’s more recent road-biased products.
Inspiration for the Project X goes back a decade to CCM’s much celebrated GP450, an innovative adventure bike built around a clever and very lightweight aluminium frame. Prized for its toughness, lack of weight and incredible off-road handling, the GP450’s promise was cut short when supply of its BMW-sourced engine ended prematurely. Since then fans of the GP450 have lobbied hard for a successor, Project X intended as the answer to their prayers.
While it’s built around a version of the TIG-welded steel frame used in CCM’s other road bikes experience of those suggests it should still be much lighter than equivalent mainstream adventure bikes, the 600cc single-cylinder engine staying true to the brand’s recent traditions as well.
Where the Project X differs from others in the line-up like the Street Moto we rode recently is in its off-road friendly suspension travel and adoption of a 21-inch front/18-inch rear wheel configuration. Longer gearing, luggage compatibility, a bigger tank and even a minimal, Dakar-style screen are also intended to make it more accommodating of longer trips than other bikes in the modern CCM range as well.
We’ll bring you more on pricing and suchlike when we have it but CCM will be accepting orders for the bike from Motorcycle Live with first deliveries expected in the summer of 2025.
