Accessible, fun and packed with attitude, Yamaha’s MT-07 has been a huge hit, especially with young riders attracted by its modern looks and lairy riding manners. Exactly the audience Yamaha is aiming at with what it describes as the most wide-ranging series of updates to the bike in its 10-year history.
This and the arrival of fresher rivals like the latest Honda Hornet explains the focus on things like tech, phone connectivity and the city-friendly option of Yamaha’s Y-AMT Automated Manual Transmission, which we tried just recently on the bike’s MT-09 big brother.
The combination of this with the Yamaha Chip-Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) system from further up the MT range and Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) variable throttle maps means everything from switchable traction control to compatibility with an optional quickshifter. All of which makes for a frankly bewildering amount of potential configurability but should mean you can make your 2025 MT-07 feel as mad or mellow as you choose.
There are significant physical changes as well, a new upside-down fork helping the looks and ride quality alike while the only thing the frame shares with the previous bike is the headstock, the swingarm mount coming in for particular attention so the rear suspension can keep pace with the new fork. Radially mounted brakes are also new, as is the fuel tank and the ducting underneath said to unleash more rider-friendly sound from the 690cc CP2 engine, especially at the lower throttle inputs you actually use in real-world riding. There’s also a new Assist&Slip clutch to help smooth its power transfer to the rear wheel.
Handlebars have also been widened, lowered and moved back while the pegs are 10mm lower as well. Yamaha’s SpinForged wheels meanwhile save vital unsprung weight, Yamaha saying the new MT-07 actually weighs a kilo less than before despite carrying over 4 kilos worth of extra kit. Impressive!
The new MT-07 is already live on Yamaha’s customer website, with pricing to be confirmed and first deliveries expected early in 2025.
