We’ve already looked at the overall top five best vans ranked by mpg in a previous article, but now we’re going into best by size, and this article is all about the top five best large vans for fuel efficiency.
Choosing the right fuel-powered large van for your business will depend on several factors including price (of course), payload capacity, maintenance costs, cabin comfort, and fuel efficiency. It’s that last factor we’re focusing on here… because a good mpg rating can lead to long-term savings if your driving habits are on point.
Which large vans deliver the best mpg?
All mpg figures below are the official WLTP combined cycle results, accurate as of September 2025 and sourced from the latest manufacturer brochures and price lists available. Just remember, more factors than mpg come into making your medium van choice, so this isn’t an order of preference. Also, these figures are the best case scenarios and should be used as an indication of potential fuel efficiency.1. Fiat Ducato / Vauxhall Movano – up to 44 mpg

The Fiat Ducato and Vauxhall Movano vans are very similar – sharing a platform and drivetrain will do that to vans. Most models running the 2.2-litre diesel engines outputting 140 horsepower will achieve that excellent mpg rating of up to 44 mpg. It’s true to say that these vans are beginning to feel their age, although the manufacturers are desperately squeezing every last of life out of the platform with facelifts, new tech and trim levels. They’re well worth a look especially because the finance and lease deals you’ll find them available on are often hard to turn down.
2. Renault Master – up to 43.4 mpg

The Renault Master was last year’s International Van of the Year, and deservedly so. We’re yet to review one properly, but we’ve been behind the wheel of one and can attest to how great a vehicle it really is. To get the quoted mpg figure above, you’ll want to choose a model running with the 2.0-litre diesel manual unit outputting 130 or 150 horsepower. Take a look and we’re sure you’ll like how the whole Master package comes together… and hopefully we’ll secure one for review in 2026.
3. Ford Transit – over 42 mpg

The Ford Transit named an entire size class of vans, continuing to refine and grow with the requirements of global businesses. The 40+ mpg rating is provided by rear-wheel drive models running the 2.0-litre diesel EcoBlue engines outputting 165 horsepower. The Transit continues to be a go-to van for many prospective customers. Name recognition is one thing but the Transit backs it all up by being one of the most comfortable and practical large vans on the market. Many van searches start with Transits, and a lot of them end there.
4. Citroen Relay – up to 41.4 mpg

The Citroen Relay is another Stellantis platform sharer, like the Fiat Ducato and Vauxhall Movano currently sitting at number two on this list. There’s little to add in a quick summary that hasn’t already been said there… but if you’re after one that scores this rating, pick a model running the 2.2-litre manual diesel engine with start/stop outputting 140 horsepower.
5. MAN TGE – up to 38.2 mpg

The MAN TGE is way more than a Volkswagen Crafter (the vehicle it is a rebadged version of), with MAN making some proper upgrades to its toughness. It might not deliver like other vans do in terms of payload and pricing, but it’s an interesting option from a manufacturer known for their good after-sales support and national coverage. That mpg rating is pretty good, too, from a 2.0-litre diesel engine!
