Vauxhall Astra Hatchback 1991‑1998(14 reviews)
1993 Astra 1.4LS auto

I bought this car in 2000 as an upgrade from a mk2 Astra 1600 estate which burnt more oil than petrol. This mk3 model I bought from a dealer and I needed an automatic with low insurance, road tax and something a bit more economical than the old mk2. It was a pleasure to drive, quiet, comfortable and economical returning over 40mpg on long runs and very cheap to service. I've owned this present Astra mk3 for nearly 16 years and it's never let me down.... ok I did have a puncture and the battery failed, but it's been as good as gold. I get it serviced regularly by my Vauxhall trained nephew and any repairs, of which there are very few, are always done before any problems occur.
Annual mileage now is under 3000 but still a good looking car. A bit of rust is appearing on the n/s/r wheel arch and the headlining is sagging now but you have to remember it's 23 years old now.
I've got every MOT and tax disc since 2000 and it's never had any advisories on the MOT, even the CO test says it's cleaner out the back than the air it draws in,,,,which as far as I'm concerned must be a good thing.
I've bought a Corsa now as I needed a slightly smaller car, and the Astra is up for sale, even so it was still one of the best cars I've owned...just hope the Corsa lives up to the Astra's reputation.

it was a 1.6 premier ltd edition. it even had ac, which was unusual given it was a 96 model but had no ew. i bought it with 80k on clock with fsh around 2003-4 and in the year or two i had it i thrashed it but you needed to because it was slow. however i did service it and kept it going. i did some serious miles in it and the only time i had a problem was when the head gasket blew but that was probably my driving. the engine was tough and the car was ok to drive. i know its been a long time since i owned it but i thought it was worth leaving a review. not that many on the road these days but would recommend one if you don't mind an old run around.
reliable dependable, anonymous

before oct 13 we did 3 to 4 thousand miles a year returning 38 to 40 mpg. which was good. since then however. we now do 500 miles a week. it has taken some astute driving, but at 100kph/62mph we get 48mpg. it turns out that German cars are tuned for this speed rather than the 56mph we have here. it is ultra reliable. never letting me down, even now its over 18 years old. admittedly she has had new rear springs, new lower front arms. a new timing belt. she is now serviced twice a year which i do myself.
i had to have a new screen as road rubble peppered the screen, but it held it's integrity. it is an anonymous car but that's no problem really.
the paint work is suffering though, the roof has marbled and the lacquer is coming off the near side front wing. rust is beginning to show it's hand but considering the age and the salt air here, it is doing rather well. my son gave me vauxhall alloy wheels last year and it does improve the appearance. a good car that will be hard to replace..
Simple and efficient

These are nice old cars. Being an Astra of the 90's it has some basic creature comforts like electric windows and some have a sunroof. There is plenty of room inside for 2 adults and two children plus a nice sized boot space even though it is a hatchback. The rear seats in mine split & fold making extra long loads easy. Not exactly a boy racers dream but competent and swift enough with a reasonable return at the fuel pumps. Has very powerful heater/blower which clears the screen in cold frosty mornings and is very simple to service if you want to do it yourself and cheap as chips even when done by the garage. Sadly not the cheapest road tax with a year's worth setting you back £220 in 2012 for the 1.6 models but with prices normally well under a grand, you can be motoring for a year for the price of a set of premium tyres! Recommend these to anyone wanting a no frills runabout.

Astra Vxr is an excellent sports hatch with more pros than cons. Drives well on the road without been too harsh on bumps and pot holes. If driven well isn't too bad on fuel. Would be good if a 5 door model was made.

I bought this car as I travelling a round trip of 120 miles a day to work and needed a rep-mobile. It was spacious and comfortable, but the paint faded quickly and the car left me stranded on two occasions. It also could have done with power steering.

My dads car oringenally. Best car ever never failed or broke down always recused our friends Ford Mondeo and sailed through every mot. The car was epic. It was very practical and always worked well for the camping trips and holidays! Its just the best ever. It would always outrun the modern ford focus or volkswagon golf! Its great to use on a daily bases, MPG averaged 59miles per gallon so it was efficent. This car has no cons to it as it was great! 5STAR CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! uNFORTUNATLY IT WENT OUR FRIENDS WHO HAD IT SCRAPPED and bought a bad ford fiesta and that was a big mistake their Fiesta had problem after problem!

This car is absolutely value for money. Its reliability is beyond my imagination. I had never owned a Vauxhall and was skeptical if I was going to get my money's worth but I can say beyond all doubts that I am happy I did. I only have to give this car away because I have a new one and it hurts doing so but I have no choice since I cannot afford keeping two cars. I hope the next owner takes very good care of my baby girl!

Had this car for about two years, nice and spacious but it was so slow! Considering its size a 1.4 8v is a serious lack of power when it only puts out 68bhp! even more so when you consider it can take 5 people without a squeese!
That aside its a very comfy car for a long journey, repairs a pretty good price and given the amount you still see about pretty reliable too!
