Had the car since June 2017 and learning to drive from then until I passed my test in September with 2 minors in it.The car has been so utterly reliable. It hasn’t let me down once apart from the sheer panic of the engine light coming on did fault code pedal test and found the codes, only to find out the car was saying the battery in the key was on its way out now since replaced the management light is no more. Nice to drive, the 1.4I Twinport engine is adequate depending if you have 4 people in and 5 well expect extreme loss of power, but if it’s you by yourself it’s super nippy believe it or not. Only criticism I have with this car, my my particular Astra has no cubby space in the centre console. I know higher trims, elite, design etc have more cubby holes but wow they are awful in my astraY. Which must I add is non existent. Strange. MPG is averaging 39-40mpg which is good. Overall brilliant car if you get a good one you will never ever regret ownership.

Nice runaround for my wife, school, shopping etc. Dog fits in the boot, enough space for the kids in the back.

Looks good, pretty fast and also economical.

Not expensive to buy either

We took on this car through a family member who didn't need it anymore. It's used as a second car, mainly commuting.

Soon after purchase, we realised it needed surgery as the warning lights lit up and the car kept going into limp mode. Fault diagnosed to the EGR valve, according to our local garage, a very common fault with this 1.3 diesel. Once replaced and engine de-coked, it runs a million times better. It does still go into limp mode if giving it a good thrashing, but driven sensibly is fine.

This car appears to have been designed for fleet use, little engine so low co2, and bombs along the motorway very happily in 6th gear. Unfortunately if it's been used for local work only it cokes up, I am in the habit of periodically adding stuff to the fuel to help prevent this.

Four adults can be carried in comfort, with space for all. Boot size is fine too.

Ours is the 'life ' spec so is very basic. Not a problem to me, but if you want toys go for a higher spec. Seats are comfy, and fine for long journeys. Nothing rattles and everything works as it should, although my son moans about the weedy stereo speaker. Sounds pathetic even with the bass to max!

The performance is actually ok from the 1248cc, but climbing hills isn't a speciality, and frequent gear changes are required to keep momentum going. The major plus side is fuel economy, my real life average so far is in the mid 50's MPG.

Since the work on the engine we are now very happy with this car. Given the choice I would prefer the 1.4 petrol.

We bought an 05 reg with 80k miles. Just wanted a car to last us a year. Okay size for family. Bit basic. No cup holders. Headlight plastic foggy but didn't fail mot for it. Bonnet faded in sun. The seller obviously filled it up with oil so warning lights didn't come on ... we had to put in 5l with lasted 600 miles and recently only did 200 miles before running out again. Mechanic said although there's a tiny leak, the oil is burning off. Handbrake keeps coming loose. The boot stopped opening for a few weeks then suddenly worked after back door was slammed shut. Emissions warning light comes on but sensor is over sensitive so gets a speck of dirt and light comes on. Cannot get rid of it quick enough.

2009 5 door Astra 1.9 16v 150 SRi diesel with exterior pack {XP} Bought in 2010 35.000 now 90,000miles, This has been the very best car I have owned so far, solid to drive, power brakes are insane, fantastic grip, tuned to 220bhp and wow it is fast, returns 49mpg, serviced once a year or every 10.000 miles, car is still like new and immaculate, good solid and hard wearing interior.

Be advised though if you don’t buy a car with excellent service record and well looked after it will be expensive when it goes wrong, problems and fixes I’ve had and done:

Blanked off the EGR unless you want to clean the thing out constantly, fix the swirl flap bar yourself with a kit on ebay for £10, gearbox whine and gear stick movement very common on these and I knew it would go when I bought it, get it fixed before it destroys the gearbox though, mine cost me £350 for all 6 bearings to be replaced and now good as new{Halifax gearbox and clutch centre}, the gearbox oil was changed every 2 years {Titan sintofluid} and it still failed, trust me you need all the bearings replaced all the tracks were scored, front and rear discs and pads replaced, and the usual stuff for servicing.

Dumb things I had to fix, the side skirts, they filled with water as there are no drain holes, so I had to drill holes in each corner as it was starting to split as the water froze…..really.

The shoddy wing mirror glass, I had both fall out over the years much to my wife’s amusement, just no sticky on them anymore, still they are only £7 each for heated mirror glass just annoying, not from Vauxhall I may add.

Despite the gearbox problem it’s not had much go wrong in 7 years so cannot complain, I did consider a new Insignia but my Astra drove better than a 2 year old 14.000mile Insignia I test drove, the salesman said so do you want to buy it today…… I said na the Astra is better I’m keeping that, the insignia is rubbish…..his face was a picture!
