BMW 525 M Sport LCI auto Diesel 2009 – Awesome car!

What can I say as this is truly an amazing car to own & drive. I have had my 3 litre straight 6 Diesel auto now for almost 3yrs & covered approx. 20,000 miles. The car is ultra-reliable (even when not used every day) & probably the best car I have ever owned. It’s an absolute pleasure to drive as even after a 100, 200, 300 or 400 mile drive you still feel relaxed enough to drive again. Over the past 3yrs the car has averaged between 35 – 50 mpg (depends on how it’s driven). I changed the tyres last December all four at a cost of £165.00 per corner. The car gets at least an oil & filter change every year on top of the service intervals (the previous owner did this to) since he purchased the car at 18 months old & 24,000 miles. My car has now covered 155,000 miles & is still going strong. In the past 3yrs I’ve had to change a main headlamp bulb + a side light one too + one set of wiper blades. Apart from that no issues at all. All I can say is If you want a truly fast comfortable family car that will cruise all day long on a motorway or just potter around town or drive on country lanes then get one of these. You won’t be disappointed, it’s just an awesome drive!

Have owned a used BMW 530d for 5 years, bought it with 100k on the clock and sold with over 180k. Used it day in day out and one or twice a year traveling around Europe a good 6k return teip, I can’t stress the absolute love I jave for this fantastic Bebarian machine it’s an absolute rocket down the moterways especially if it has the auto gearbox with the sport button which changes the cars setting to make it a beast. Good fule economy for a 3l and the design is absolutely stunning with those front eyebrow head lights and all round good design. In terms of tyres I only put the best on which cost around £150 per corner and serviced every 10K eith Castrol fully synthetic. Well maintained on my behalf and never had any issues whatsoever. One thing these cars can be stolen so easily thanks to someone sort of BMW software issue so be careful where you park (mine was stolen then recovered agin). Google it and you will know more, easy fix get a steering lock. Can’t recommend the car enough pure driving machine at now a very affordable price, never let me down one !

Pros

Great engine - zero emissions even now nearly at 140k miles

gearbox and handling

Effortless acceleration and very fast compared to previous model which I had the pleasure of owning for 6 years.

lovely and simple dash board layout

Easy to park

Cons

Poor sound system and reception

Hard and firm ride

Lots of road noise due to run flat tyres

Expensive run flat tyres that do not appear to last....

Bulky steering wheel on the SE model. Wish had enough money to buy the sport model that comes with a M sport steering wheel

Front driver electric seat very low. When raised it goes up at an angle of about 45 degrees towards the steering wheel - driver ends up too close to the steering wheel. ( To be honest the driver seat is not very comfortable) A 2 hour trip tends to give me a back ache and neck pain. Maybe I am just a weakling or cry baby

The rear seats do not fold compared to my previous E39

Paint wearing off on the dash board and near the start button - why?

Some minor intermittent rattling from the driver side door

Car is lighter than the previous model but does not drive any better. After 2 years of ownership I am already bored and looking to sell

SE models struggle to hold their value

BRILLIANT CAR

LOADS OF COMMON PROBLEMS THOUGH SO IF THINGS LIKE THE GEARBOX AND EGR DPF ARE NOT DONE PLEASE STAY AWAY !

GENUINELY WILL GET YOU USED TO THE FINER STYLE OF DRIVING AND EVERY JOURNEY IS RELAXED WITH PLENTY OF TOYS AND GIZMOS TO KEEP YOU ON POINT

THE CAR HAS TIMELESS LOOKS AND THE CLASS OF IT STILL STRIKES TO THIS DAY.

INSURANCE IS ON THE HIGHER END AS ARE THE SERVICE COSTS BUT ALL WORTH IT WHEN YOU GO BACK INTO A SMALLER CAR.

MILES BETTER THAN A 3 SERIES AND ONLY SHORT A FEW NOTCHES FROM A 7 SERIES, MSPORT LOOKS ARE AMAZING AND THE PRACTICALITY WITH A FAMILY ALONG WITH COMFORTS ARE UNMATCHED.

LOVED MY 2 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP AND ENJOYES MOTORWAYS WITH THIS CAR, ALL IN A GOOD BUY.

German efficiency? not this BMW !

Although the overall reviews for this car are very good, me myself got a lot of trouble with this model. The model 5 series 2007 is known for its mechanical faults especially engine related which was the problem in my case. The car looks great and drives good however reliability to my experience was very poor and i lost £2000 on repairs.

Maybe i was unlucky with my BMW 5 series, but it is know that the year 2007 models have faulty engines and some are recalled back.

BMW 520D MANUAL. A DECENT CAR AFTER A REMAP PUSHING AT 200 BHP. BAD CHOICE GOING FOR THE MANUAL, AUTO ALOT SMOOTHER. IN HINDSIGHT SHOULD HAVE GONE FOR THE BOMB PROOF 530D ENGINE AS YOU WONT FIND YOURSELF WITH A 1K+ AFTER 70K MILES, THE 3 LITRE ENGINES ARE MUCH BETTER BUILT RETURNING DECENT ECONOMY TOO. CAR IS EXCELLENT ON THE HIGHWAY EFFORTLESS REALLY. IM 6FT 4 SO THE CAR IS NOT REALLY PRACTICAL. GETTING IN AND OUT IS A BLOODY EFFORT ON THE HAMSTRINGS!!! A VERY LOW SEATING POSITION COMPARED TO MY BEAST AUDI A8. INTERIOR ALSO VERY DRAB FOR BMW. CARS IS GREAT ON FUEL CANT COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT. WOULD PROBABLY BUY A NEWER VERSION IF IT WAS EASY GETTING IN AND OUT AS BMW ARE RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE TREE IMO GERMAN ENGINEERING NOTHING COMPARES.

This was without doubt the worst car I have ever owned for reliability.

In 4 years of ownership it had 2 replacement turbos, 1 replacement DCS controller, 2 x part wiring looms replaced, 2 x ABS sensors replaced, 1 x wheel bearing. These repairs are £2k for a turbo at BMW, £2k for the DCS unit and 6 visits to the main dealer getting it diagnosed at BMW, £500 for the wheel bearing fitted at BMW...

All of the repairs were covered by a comprehensive warranty I bought with the car apart from the last turbo which my local garage did for me before it was sold. I was on first name terms with the BMW garage....

Do you get the message on how bad these cars are? I can't possibly put into words how massively disappointed I was with this car. You think that BMW's are built well, that's the image BMW want you to see, it's all just a smokescreen and I'll never get another BMW again.

If you think I'm being over the top and too harsh just look at the annual power survey and see how many BMW cars make it into the top half for reliability, one or two if your lucky. In 2015 the BMW 5 series E60 was ranked 198 of 200 for reliability, the only two worst cars were Land Rovers...

In fact, why don't you take a close look at reliability in the power survey. It's a fact that BMW, AUDI, VW, Mercedes are all very poor for reliability. It's just fact.

Car positives.

Comfortable seats, good at cruising on the motorway, reasonable fuel economy.

I have owned this car now just over a year now, as all the bmw I have owened, a excellent car, never spent any money on repair's, just service.

had the car remaped to 225bhp, which is better than the factory 177bhp.

on a full tank, without motorway driving, i will get 570 miles.

great drive & comfortable, load's of room.

I know the m sport is lower than the standard 5 series, but I had it lowerd 35mm & it look's awesome, with the refurb wheel & a nice meaty rear boot spoiler, this car is really eye catching.

had the car remapped as I think the 2liter diesel is under power,if I could go back,i would go for the 535d, but you would have to concider the running cost ? 520d is a good choice, with a remap.

e60 m sport great car & shape, not so keen on the new shape.

i owned this car for 6 years managed to make it 120000 miles from 80000 , for all these years i was only doing normal service, oil, filter changes. i never called AA for anything i wasted my money paying AA when you own this type of a car cancel your AA straight away because you will never need to ring them anyway. i used it for long journeys London to Scotland short journeys in and around London. 500% this is a realy work horse.
