The Auto Trader verdict:

4.1/5
The BMW 1-series hatchback now has a class-leading interior to go with those fantastic driving dynamics, but it’s still a confused offering in the small family car market with controversial styling and poor rear packaging.

I have the 125d engine. Quick when needed averages around 49 mpg with mixed driving. Beautiful blue in colour and stands out from the crowd. M pack sometimes too hard. Sports seats tight on me as I am a large guy.

The Little M135i with the super fast Auto/Manual gearbox is fantastic.

As very fast hot hatch, rear wheel drive, fast gear changes.

We have toured southern France and Scotland in it, its a motorway muncher and a Mountain Pass puncher. Its great for parking in the little diddy car parking spaces that seem to get smaller and smaller. We ungraded the Exhaust to a M-Sport exhaust and it pops, bangs and sounds fantastic when overtaking. You can pick these up for a little over 10K now which make them a steal at what they can do. You wont be disappointed with a M135i its one of those understated weapons.

Overall best car I have owned in the past 30 years. Comfortable, very good handling, economical 60mpg, and even after 170K miles 5 years old still ultra reliable. The only slight fault, exhaust mounting a little noisy/rattly when cold.

Purchased in 2012 (ex Olympic Staff car). It was a step-down from Porsche Cayenne Turbo which cost too much.

We love the reliability, interior quality, sound system, efficiency and in town performance (in Sport mode).

The handling is great. Easy to park with sensors and camera.

Out of town is great on motorway.

Build quality is first class.

If i could change ... would have been great to have had Auto that was Congestion Charge free.

Would improve engine mounts. The diesel engine is starting to make a lot of noise. BMW will be looking at it soon.

Would improve iPhone integration and software updates to BMW Connect

Just bought the 116d. Doesn't feel as 'twitchy' as the petrol versions I tested, but this might be due to the run-flats tyres?

The 116i feels 'punchier' than the 116d, but the diesel certainly doesn't lack torque. It's not fast, but it doesn't feel slow.

The economy is excellent (70mpg) on a long run, bit London driving dips into the low 50s.

So far, I am impressed.

The Perfect Hatchback, mine is the Sport (Not M Sport) which comes with an 8- Speed Trip Tronic Auto Gearbox, it has 4 different driving Modes 1. Eco-Pro Mode - to save fuel

2. Comfort Mode- in the middle, low revs but with the ability to down shift to pick up speed, the start/stop works to to save fuel

3. Sport Mode - this makes the Suspension and the steering wheel stiffens (start/stop is off) for a more dynamic driving style, the rev count changes gear on the last possible digit before the red line.

4. Sport+ Mode - Everything in Sport Mode plus DSC is off, to give the maximum possible speed. for dynamic driving.

Road Tax is £30 for the full year, insurance is low and also i get 570 miles for a full tank! this is a perfect car, its got the economy and the speed. perfect combo.

I would recommend to go for the 5 door as there is much more leg space in the rear seats, i have the 3 door which is ok for me but can face problems when i need to seat more than 3 people.

Amazing car with fantastic handling and performance which is able to take down Porsches on country lanes while being a practical hatchback!

The car is very dynamic, practical and comfortable. The overall experience is a joy and I am pleased I have purchased the car. I am impressed by the robust engine and the fuel economy. Can't go wrong with this car in London, perfect size/ engine strenght ratio and it looks great.

Had the car 3 years in september, when it'll be going back to the lease company (leased through work). I will be sad to see this car go - not the most practical, even in 5door guise, but what a car it is. Impeccably smooth, sharp, engaging and responsive ride. Road holding is brilliant - and with the traction control and anti skid control switched off its quite tail happy, but not dangerous - its always easy to catch if you're being a bit "overenthusiastic". The engine and gearbox are a marriage made in heaven - silky smooth 2litre diesel is a good solid unit - with a decent amount of grunt through the rev range. Gearbox is brilliant, changes so smoothly and the sport mode works well - holding it in gear longer. The switchable ecu us great, eco-pro for sensible tree-hugger friendly driving, comfort for not so sensible and sport for when you're feeling like a bit of fun. Brilliant car, proper bmw regardless of what people say. Not had one problem in the nearly 3 years of ownership. Only slight niggle is, paintwork chios easily on door sills - starting to show tiny specs of rust. Other than that, perfect car. Would keep it for another 3 years happily. Looks great in white too! If you're thinking of getting one, just go and have a drive, then you'll make up your mind.

M135i Auto 5Dr

Fantastic every day car. Very fast with awesome straight 6 turbo engine. If you are looking for one try and go for the active suspension and auto box as these improve the standard car no end. Have had mine for 2 years and 20k miles without any problems. Cheap tax, insurance and fuel has also been pretty reasonable with 30 mpg everyday and over 40 mpg on a long sensible run which is fantastic for the performance on offer. Not good in the snow and difficult to get the power down in the wet also. Space pretty good and quality excellent. Have tried Golf R and S3 Audi but neither are a BMW and both miss that Straight 6 engine. Having trouble with what to replace it with to be honest.
