The Auto Trader verdict:

3.9/5
The Audi A1 is an upmarket supermini designed to appeal to style-conscious buyers who might otherwise choose a Mini or Citroen DS3. It’s well-equipped, efficient and great fun to drive.

My 1.4 TFSI S-Tronic A1 Sport has been 100% reliable. Its built like a tank, and feels very stable at all times. 1.4 petrol engine is a gem. Average 49mpg over 1.75 years so far, mixed driving. and improving. Basically boils down to 40mpg on short trips and 55mpg on long trips. Have seen over 60mpg. Very quiet and refined. Stereo lovely sound. Downsides, quite cramped in the back, knew this though, and it does what its meant to do pretty well. Build quality is 1st class, and still feels like a brand new car. Drives more like a sports car than a city car. Would definitely recommend

Solid car, good to drive, low running costs

Audi A1

I've had this car for over a year now, and have been very impressed. I bought this car to replace my very disappointing Mercedes GLA, and have never looked back - it beats the GLA in almost every way.

It drives and handles well - even though it's got a 1.6 diesel, it feels quite peppy and alive - the steering is responsive, and although the suspension is meant to be quite hard, I haven't noticed any issues. Running costs are good too - once the engine warmed up, I routinely got over 70mpg without too much hassle, and you don't pay any road tax.

Practicality is decent too - I routinely use it to carry my family around, with 2 normal height people and my husband and son who are both around 6'3. Although the rear headroom in the back is quite cramped, we routinely use it to do the 1.5hr drive to London from where we live. The boot is a good size for the size of the car, and the front seats are comfy.

I've never had to take it into the dealer for any issues other than a normal service - a first for any car I've owned within the first year!

The only area which I slightly miss the GLA is the extra ride height - but the A1 makes up by being far more easy to use in cramped cities.

Overall, it's been a great car and one I'd buy again without hesitation

Audi A1 TFSI 1.0L TFSI Automatic 5 door

Audi A1

This car is simply amazing for a small car. I have a Audi A1 1.0L TFSI automatic. The positives of the car include, the launch on this car is incredible, tyres grip instantly if you rev the engine and put it into gear. However, it would wheel spin for a good 6 seconds if conditions are wet. Acceleration is great when you go into semi auto and downshift. It's brilliant into turns at relatively high speed, it would sling shot around a corner, keeping all four wheels on the ground. This car is extremely fuel efficient, while surprising for a small powerful machine. Average around 70mpg on motorways travelling at 60mph. And 72mpg when travelling at 55mph on country roads. However, the car does have its drawbacks. The gear change between 3 and 2 when slowing down is kind of jerky, as a driver you'd feel the gear change but as an average car driver, you get this feeling couple times a day. Another disadvantage of this car is that the space for passengers at the back don't have enough space (note I have a 5 door) the pedals are so far forward that you have to take your seat all the way to the back and I'm only 5'8! Imagine someone who's over 6ft. This wouldn't be the car for them. An average person wouldn't practically like being at the back, not spacious enough. Recently I went to IKEA and putting things into the boot is a nightmare, even when the seats are flat and the front seat is almost at the front, the discomfort is real, because my seat has to be so far back it will lack the space. Another disadvantage of this car is when put into S mode, it will waste fuel incredibly fast, but I must say, IT IS EXETREMLY FUN TO DRIVE ON S, INSTANT POWER!! I'd average 20mpg city driving in this mode. Another bad thing audi have done with this car is that the front wind screen isn't large enough compared to rivals, this isn't a huge deal, but for some it may be. Overall this is a lovable car and I would recommend it!

POOR CAR POOR SERVICE.

Audi A1

Steve | 4th February '17

I give very poor ratings on this car. When starting from cold it sounds like the starter motor is sticking on. This only sounds a minor thing but spending 20 thousand pound plus it’s very annoying. Three times back to dealers only to be told they cannot fix a so called characteristic. Also if you don't like grinding cheap disc pads don't buy this car. Passenger door don't close properly. window wipers drag the rain back onto screen. Not maybe great inconvenience but more than enough to put myself of ever buying an AUDI again. And don't expect much help from the dealer that's a bad experience in itself.

Third Audi A1 and best variant yet

Audi A1

Rainey1968 | 26th September '16

What a car. This is the third A1 we have owned and the black edition 1.4 tfsi is by far the best engine. We had the diesel variant prior and no better fuel efficiency than our new petrol model. We have the 150ps s-tronic cylinder on demand version and can accelerate brutally when required but also be extremely economical with the cylinder on demand. Our past diesel was noisy and could be sluggish so the petrol is so refreshing.

Money well spent
