Calling all fans of TV’s ‘Long Way…’, the multi-season adventure motorcycle travel series starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman – the fourth and final series will be available to stream for your weekend viewing pleasure!
Called ‘Long Way Home’, the new production follows in the footsteps of 2004’s original and hugely successful ‘Long Way Round’, 2007’s succeeding ‘Long Way Down’ and 2020’s ‘Long Way Up’ and, like those, is again a multi-part travelogue following the bike-riding pair on a themed adventure. Long Way Round saw the acting buddies ride 19,000 miles from London to New York on BMW R 1150 GSAs via Asia. Long Way Down took them 15,000 miles from Scotland to Cape Town at the tip of South Africa on R 1200 GSAs while Long Way Up followed the pair’s 13,000-mile ride from southern Argentina to Los Angeles on electric Harley-Davidson LiveWires.
Again starring McGregor and Boorman, Long Way Home reunites the pair for another great motorbike tour, although this one is a little closer to home. This time the pair take on a journey aboard characterfully battered classic motorcycles from Ewan’s home in Scotland to Charley’s in England while, clue in the title, taking the ‘long way’ to get there.
First, they head across the North Sea to Scandinavia before riding all the way up to the Arctic Circle, then down to the Baltics and through continental Europe, before eventually hopping back over the English Channel two months later. In total the trip takes them through more 15 countries, through spectacular scenery and along some of the greatest driving roads in the world. Along the way they also immerse themselves in each country’s culture, meet locals and try their hand at unique activities.
Each has chosen their own bike for the trip, Ewan going for an ex-police 1974 Moto Guzzi El Dorado in his position as a long-tim fan and ambassador for the Italian brand. Boorman’s pick is, meanwhile, a 1972 BMW R75/5.
“On a rather tricky, sandy bit of ‘Long Way Up,’ Charley and I started to daydream about another trip to keep our minds off the scary road at hand!” says McGregor. “This is that trip. Rusty old bikes and 10,000 miles of Scandinavia and Eastern and Central Europe. A big loop from my house in Scotland to Charley’s house in England. Long way home … magic.” “It has been such a pleasure to get back on the road on motorcycles with my best friend Ewan,” adds Boorman. “We’ve talked about doing this trip on old bikes since the last one. Travelling around Scandinavia and Europe has been a blast on our beautiful bikes.”
The series is executive produced by McGregor and Boorman, alongside longtime collaborators David Alexanian and Russ Malkin, who also direct.
Ewan and Charley’s adventures over the last 20 years have received praise from both critics and fans alike. The original ‘Long Way Round’was a global hit and is widely credited with boosting the popularity of BMW’s R 1150 GSA and its successors. Similar success for the two subsequent series made this fourth one a no-brainer and a treat for bikers everywhere. Long Way Home comprises 10 episodes and streams on the Apple TV+ subscription service from this Friday. Watch the trailer here.
