Do I have to plug it in?

Strictly speaking, no. The van will run as a standard petrol hybrid if you don't charge it. However, we strongly recommend plugging in whenever possible. If you never charge, you are simply carrying the "dead weight" of the battery, which will make your fuel economy worse than a standard diesel. The real savings come from maximising your electric miles.

Can a Plug-In Hybrid van tow?

Yes, and much better than before. The new Ford Ranger PHEV maintains a full 3,500kg towing capacity. Other models like the Ford Transit Custom PHEV can tow up to 2,000kg. Always check the specific "Gross Train Weight" of the vehicle before leasing if towing is a priority.

Do PHEVs get the Government Grant?

No. The "Plug-in Van Grant" (up to £2,500/£5,000) is now exclusive to fully electric vans (with zero tailpipe emissions). However, for business users, PHEVs can still be a tax-efficient choice compared to older diesels, and they protect you from future low-emission zone fees.

How far can I drive on electric power alone?

Most modern PHEV vans have an electric-only range of between 25 and 35 miles. This is designed to cover the average daily commute or a full day of "last-mile" deliveries in a city centre, while the petrol engine handles longer inter-city trips.

Are they exempt from the Congestion Charge?

Generally, no. While PHEVs are usually exempt from ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) charges, they typically do not qualify for the 100% Cleaner Vehicle Discount on the London Congestion Charge (which is now limited to battery-electric or hydrogen vehicles). You will still need to pay the daily congestion fee in central London.
