When machinery is stolen, it is inconvenient and expensive. It can hold up jobs and lead to you losing out on money. We don’t want you out of pocket, which is why we have put together these top tips, to help reduce the chance of getting your construction machinery from getting robbed.
1. Lock your vehicles up
Where possible, keep your vehicle in a locked garage or building and store your keys securely out of sight.
If you can’t get somewhere indoors to store your machinery, block smaller machinery in with any bigger vehicles you own.
2. Make sure you have alarms & lighting
When your machinery is not in use, keep it well lit - it’s less attractive to thieves than darkness - to do this, install lighting and alarms around the building where your item is stored.
Some trackers alert you to movements and will even direct the police to where your machinery is, investing in preventative measures can really pay off. If you want more information on preventative anti-theft devices like alarms, immobilisers and trackers, your local dealer will be able to give you advice.
3. Keep it public
The public act as a deterrent to thieves - people are less likely to steal if they are going to get caught so if you’ve not got a garage or somewhere private, park your machinery in a public place.
Consider using a security company too. It can be expensive, so weigh up if it’s worth it.
4. Mark your machinery
Forensically mark your machinery, so it can be identified if stolen. This will make it harder for thieves to resell.
5. Warn thieves off
Why not put signs up warning people you have security measures in place? This is simple but it could help.
6. Get snappy
Take pictures of your machines and make sure you include their serial numbers and any identifying marks - it will help if your items are ever stolen and recovered. Store these pictures on the cloud so you don’t lose your evidence if you break your phone.
We hope these tips for making sure your machinery is kept safe are helpful! If you think you’ve found some stolen machinery, call the police on 101.
