Crossovers are the defining automotive trend of our time, be they regular cars dressed up to look like SUVs or SUVs dressing down to appear more like coupes or hatchbacks. And it seems even supercars are catching the bug. How so? Well, while it’s not a comparison you’d ever have expected to hear, just as a Dacia Sandero Stepway is to the regular Sandero the new Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato Rory drives here is like the regular Huracan … but with a bit of plastic body cladding and a bit more ride height. Because off-road, and all that.
Which makes some sense for spicing up a budget hatchback. But a supercar? Lamborghini isn’t the only one playing this game. Like the Porsche 911 Dakar Rory drove just recently the Huracan Sterrato is intended to take the supercar spirit where it’s never been before. And into the wilds, where the tarmac runs out and the terrain gets a bit more challenging. Not usually where you’d expect a low-slung sports car to prosper. But both Porsche and Lamborghini have found a way to make it work. As Rory explains, the Sterrato will be the last of the line of Huracans, and the final Lamborghini to use the decidedly non-turbocharged, non-hybrid (and wonderfully loud) V10 petrol engine that has been the common thread linking all the many and various versions we’ve enjoyed over the years. It’s also the slowest, which may seem a bit of a curveball from a brand usually dedicated to making each new model faster than the previous one. But one that in the dust and gravel of an Italian quarry Rory discovers makes perfect sense. Whisper it, but maybe even more sense than the wild, track focused Huracan STO. Words can only do so much to describe it, so click the video and feast your eyes on what the Sterrato can do, and why Rory reckons it might just be the best Huracan yet.
