When you’ve got a long way to go and you know you’re going to be sat at the wheel for hours, you want your car to be as relaxing as it can possibly be. And this year’s winner of our Best Car for Long Distances award, the Volvo XC60, does just that.
Like all our awards, this category was decided by feedback collated from a survey of more than 60,000 car owners, all of whom rated their car in 16 key areas. That means an Auto Trader New Car Award is a real stamp of approval from people that live with the car day-in, day-out, and it makes each winner a true consumer champion. High-mileage owners were particularly impressed with the XC60’s comfort, awarding it a virtually-unheard-of 100% score, putting it top of the class in this area. It also ranked in second place for power, safety and space. Here are just a few of the comments owners made about the XC60…
  • “The ergonomic layout of the vehicle controls allows me to remain focused on the road ahead and other vehicles around me while on the move.”
  • “Great balance of good ride and performance, and feels very safe and secure when driving.”
  • “The safety features this car comes with make it feel that you are in a very strong, reliable and safe vehicle.”
Commenting on the XC60’s victory in this category, Auto Trader’s road test editor, Ivan Aistrop, said: “The XC60 turned out to be the firm favourite with the high-mileage owners in our survey, and that should be no surprise to anyone. It’s a comfortable and quiet companion on a long journey, which really helps you get to where you’re going in a relaxed, chilled-out state. You also have generous luxury equipment to keep you entertained and contented, and with good space and practicality, those in the back will be loving life, too.”
However, while the XC60 is a fine high-mileage car, it didn’t make the list of the very best according to our experts. You can see what did in our Best Long Distance Cars feature. You can also see what our experts think of the XC60 in general in our expert review . So, will the XC60 take top honours again in 2020, or will another car be voted in ahead of it? Both the Honda Civic and Toyota C-HR came close as runners-up, so could they go one better next year? If you spend most of your time munching the miles on the motorway, and you’re looking for your next car, you can find or configure your brand new Volvo XC60 on Auto Trader right now.
