The hottest hot hatch at the time of its launch, the 280bhp Vauxhall Astra VXR is a bit of an animal. But, despite its hilarious pace it’s not too noisy or uncomfortable when you want to relax.

The Vauxhall Astra is a good car, but it has one big problem. It competes in a class where there are some absolutely stunning cars, and in that sort of company, ‘good’ just isn’t good enough. That said, if you choose the right combination of engine trim, you’ll get a very capable all-rounder for a competitive price, and it shouldn’t cost the earth to run.

Hot hatch fans will remember the outgoing Vauxhall Astra VXR as a rather lairy beast. Sporting 237bhp, it outgunned nearly all of its contemporaries, but was a proper brute of a car.

Vauxhall has introduced its new BiTurbo diesel engine into the Astra hatchback and Sports Tourer estate, after its successful debut in the Astra GTC coupe. The engine, which uses advanced sequential turbocharging technology – something which is usually the preserve of more expensive executive and performance cars – develops 192bhp and a healthy 295lb/ft of pulling power.
