The BMW M3 has delighted fans over six generations of cars and previously been offered in coupe, saloon and cabriolet versions. But never an estate, despite rivals like the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63 both offering this option to buyers wanting performance and practicality. Finally, BMW has bowed to pressure and given the 3 Series Touring the full M3 treatment, complete with the full 510 horsepower engine and all the attitude of the saloon and M4 Coupe equivalents. Worth the wait? Watch the video to find out, and meanwhile check out our 10 reasons you might just love the new M3 Touring.

1. The M3 Touring is what you make it

From a compact family estate to a convincing track star, it can adapt to whatever you want it to be. It might just be the best all-round performance car on the market.

2. The driving dynamics are 10 stages of crazy

The 10-step variable traction control system lets you customise how the car feels, and exactly how it handles. Whether that be in all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, you can choose how sideways you want to go with what BMW describes as ‘controlled drifts’, as demonstrated here by Rory.

3. The glass on the boot lid opens independently

The M3 Touring hides a simple, yet effective hidden trick on its rear tailgate, the glass rear window able to open separately at the touch of a button so you can chuck in some shopping or a couple small bags without needing to open the whole thing. Meanwhile the shape of the main boot really utilises the rear space, with rear seats that fold flat easily and underfloor storage for all your bits and bobs.

4. The technology is cutting edge

Within the cabin, you’ll find BMW’s latest interior design cues, including the sleek curved display, a combined digital instrument panel and central screen that pans across the dashboard. Everything is controlled via use of the 14.9-inch touch screen, which can also be used in conjunction with the iDrive dial if you prefer.

5. A black high gloss roof comes standard

An aesthetic perk of the M3 Touring is the high-gloss black contrast roof, which really finishes the overall look. Regardless of what exterior colour you pick out, the air directing flap on the roof spoiler and the roof rails are painted in the same black shade.

6. M Performance branding is everywhere

The exclusive M Sport Performance branding on the outside matches the racing inspired cabin inside. Extensive use of carbon fibre with Alcantara on the backrests, steering wheel, knee pads and arm rests give that premium interior feel.

7. Are you sitting sportily?

Carbon fibre skinned seats are set nice and low for that sportier feel, although the bucket shape might not be too comfortable on longer journeys. If you want to go even further BMW offers the option of full leather Merino Black leather with contrasting stitching in black and grey.

8. It’s fast, and furious

With 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds the Touring is brutally fast in a straight line but also carves corners like a boss. However, it certainly isn’t the most economical daily for a cost-of-living crisis, but for enthusiasts with a family but no intention to compromise on fun at the wheel it merges everything you could want into a smaller, luxury estate bundle.

9. All-wheel drive for all seasons

Variable drift modes are all very well for the track when someone else is paying for your tyres but for those cold, winter days when the roads are greasy most drivers will probably be more interested in the clever all-wheel drive to help you enjoy the might performance whatever the weather.

10. No apologies

Love or hate it, the M3 Touring has BMW’s confrontational grille design with its exaggerated expression of the traditional ‘kidney’ graphic. Beyond this a confident stance, defined body lines and M Performance wheels build a car combining an impressive amount of practicality and usability. Enjoyed this video?
