We are big fans of the BMW 4 Series. With the convertible gaining the maximum five stars in our expert review, the time has come for BMW’s sporty middle child to come in for what the brand calls a ‘lifecycle impulse’, otherwise known in the jargon as a facelift. Changes for the coupe and convertible include a software update and tweaks inside and out, while the M4 Competition now packs 530 horsepower.
• The 4 Series comes in several guises, it’s the two-door coupe and convertible models being refreshed; high performance M4 Competition is also updated and is now more powerful • The revised coupe and convertible get new headlight and taillight designs, a refreshed interior and updated tech • The M4 Competition Coupe has a 0-62 mph time of just 3.5 seconds • Available to order now, with deliveries expected in spring of this year • Prices start at £43,020 for the coupe and £49,695 for the convertible; M4 Competition Coupe starts at £84,250

Design and models available

The latest 4 Series coupe and convertible have had a facelift, although you’ll need a keen eye to spot the difference between new and old. On closer inspection you’ll notice that the new 4 Series no longer has separate front fog lights as the functionality has been integrated into the new LED headlight design. There’s also an adaptive, non-dazzling headlight option that moves round the corners and with this you’ll also get laser taillights. The design retains the large kidney grille at the front and, although it has become the signature of BMW design, like Marmite, it continues to divide opinion. At the rear of the car there’s now a black high-gloss diffuser on the bumper and fractionally larger exhaust pipes.
There are two new metallic paint colours to choose from, ‘Cape York Green’ and ‘Fire Red’ giving a total of 11 main options. Additionally, BMW offers more choice via its ‘Individual’ special paint programme where parts are hand painted with over 160 different shades on offer. The wheel designs have been updated too.

Interior and tech

Inside there’s a new multifunction steering wheel design with paddle gear selectors now included as standard, while the M performance models get their own new design. There’s new seat fabrics and the option to have clear crystal glass on some of the controls. The 4 Series will now have an updated operating system supporting the latest tech. There’s a large, curved display that shows the instrument cluster in front of the driver and the infotainment system in the centre of the car. An updated menu structure has been designed to make adjusting the climate control easier, and there’s an optional navigation system featuring augmented reality. This can project navigation instructions and highlight suitable parking spots. The updates have been designed with customisation in mind so that your 4 Series will feel individual to you, and you now get ambient lighting as standard with nine different colour options.

Engines

The 420i M Sport provides 184 horsepower, while the M440i xDrive has four-wheel-drive, producing 374 horsepower. This is aided by mild hybrid technology, adding an extra boost off the line. If that’s not enough for you the M4 Competition will now deliver 530 horsepower, going from 0-62 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds in the coupe, and 3.7 seconds in the convertible. Whilst opting for an M4 will hit your fuel economy, the entry level 4 Series coupe has a WLTP of up to 53mpg.

What other cars from BMW are due this year?

BMW has been busy updating lots of its models ready for 2024. Along with the 4 Series, there have been updates to the iX2 line-up with a new entry-level spec and the XM gets a new hybrid system.
There’s also a top of the range Z4 with a manual gearbox on offer for the first time, the Z4 M40i Handschalter. The name makes it sound like a Bond villain, but this translates from German as manual switch, highlighting the model’s key feature.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

The BMW 4 Series will have its closest competition from its German rivals. Mercedes-Benz is about to bring us the new CLE Cabriolet in addition to the CLE Coupe already on sale. Meanwhile, although Audi has dropped its A5 convertible, you can still have an A5 Coupe as an alternative to the 4 Series.
