In a motoring landscape dominated by SUVs and crossovers the VW ID.Buzz stands out as something very different indeed, and perhaps a new direction for families seeking the ultimate practical electric vehicle.
While the electric tech powering it is cutting-edge and shared with the rest of the VW ID family, the Buzz combines this with super cool retro styling inspired by the iconic hippy buses and camper vans of days gone by. But where these were powered by noisy and not especially powerful petrol engines the Buzz instead uses a refined electric motor with performance owners of those classic buses could only dream of. In its commercial van form the ID.Buzz provides an eye-catching way for switched-on businesses to make some noise about adopting clean electric power. But that same space and practicality also makes it a perfect family car, and it’s this version Rory puts to the test in this video. From the eye-catching two-tone paint on the outside to the equally stylish pastel shades in the interior, the ID.Buzz goes all out to pluck the heart strings and make you stand out from the crowd. Does it have the substance to back up the style, though? That’s what Rory sets out to discover, as he takes cover from the rain to explore the huge amount of interior space the Buzz offers and the many different ways you can use it.

How much is a VW ID.Buzz?

Style comes at quite the price with the ID.Buzz, with the range kicking off at just shy of £60,000. To that you’ll have to add another £1,800 if you want the trendy two-tone paint, while depending on the trim level the funky fabrics on the seats could add more than £3,000 to the price, unless you go for the top of the range First Edition. For context the more conventional looking ID.4 SUV, which is basically the same vehicle underneath, starts at £40,000 while one with the same battery pack as the ID.Buzz is about £50,000 – a whole £10,000 cheaper!

What’s the range for the ID.Buzz?

For now the ID.Buzz comes with just the one battery option and has a claimed range of just over 250 miles on a charge, though Rory’s experiences suggest it might be a bit less on a cold and wet winter’s day. Hopefully still enough for the school run and day-to-day errands, but if you’re planning that big summer road trip for all the family you might have to factor in a few extra stops to keep it topped up.
