For two apparently similar cars the Porsche 911 GT3 and BMW M4 CSL go about their business in very different ways. All of which sets up a fascinating on-track duel for presenters Alex Kersten and Rory Reid, and the opportunity to drive both cars to the absolute limit. Or, occasionally, beyond.
Designed as the sharpest versions of their respective model line-ups, both cars build on already solid sporting foundations and tune them with a motorsport mindset for head-turning looks on the road and incredible performance on the circuit. They do this with a combination of specially tuned engines, sticky tyres, improved downforce from additional wings and a top to tail programme of weight saving reflected in stripped out interiors with enough special features to make it feel you’re driving a racing car. Even when you’re just popping down the shops. Both have list prices in the region of £130,000 but availability is strictly limited to ensure demand will always exceed supply. Those lucky enough to secure one new are therefore in the fortunate position of being able to name their price in the used market, given the queue of eager buyers who missed out on the opportunity to buy new. All well and good. But which is actually better to drive?

What is a Porsche 911 GT3?

Given the starting price it’s not quite true to say there’s a Porsche 911 for everyone, but there’s no lack of options for those in the fortunate position to buy one. For the regular models you have the choice of coupe, cabriolet or so-called Targa models with neat folding hardtops, two- or all-wheel drive and a host of extras to make it yours. Trim lines progress through Carrera, GTS and Turbo with increasing power and prestige, while the GT3 models go their own way with a dedicated 4.0-litre engine that trades turbos for revs and combines radically overhauled suspension with huge add-on wings for the ultimate in circuit performance. Highly prized among enthusiasts – especially track day fanatics – Porsche carefully manages supply of GT3s to ensure rock-solid residual prices for those lucky enough to make the allocation for new models. There are faster 911s and there are more luxurious 911s. But the GT3s are by far the sharpest, and most thrilling to drive.

What is a BMW M4 CSL?

Based on the already potent M4 Competition coupe , the CSL revives a very special name from BMW’s sporting past, and one reserved for only the most special of cars. Traditionally these have direct inspiration from racing models of the same name, CSL standing for ‘Competition Sport Lightweight’ and expressed with wide-ranging modifications in the name of improved performance through increased power and reduced weight. Alex explains the features in detail in the video but the headlines include a power bump from the standard M4’s 510 horsepower to a mighty 550 horsepower, while carbon fibre for the body panels, seats and other parts help trim 100kg out of the overall weight. Modifications to the brakes, steering and suspension then contribute to a level of intensity beyond that you get from the regular M4, confirmation that BMW will bring just 100 of the total production of 1,000 cars ensuring its exclusivity. Enough to knock the 911 GT3 off its perch, though?

Which is fastest?

You’ll have to watch the video to see which of these gym-fit German track stars has what it takes to win on the circuit. And if that’s not enough there’s a bonus drag-race video you won’t want to miss.
