BMW’s twin track approach to electrification is now well established, i-branded versions of familiar models like the 4 Series Gran Coupe, 7 Series and X3 sitting alongside the petrols, diesels and hybrids to offer electrified options for those who want them. The latest addition is the i5, the fully electric version of the new 5 Series saloon and tested here in its top of the range, 601 horsepower M60 xDrive form.
With that kind of power you might think this counts as the electric replacement for mega horsepower M5 super saloons we’ve enjoyed in previous years. While it carries the badge this M60 xDrive isn’t actually what you’d call a ‘full’ M car, but as you’ll see when Rory deploys the launch control nobody’s going to be disappointed with the performance. Or the way the i5 puts it to the road via its combination of twin-motor all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and range of driving modes covering the full spectrum from mild to wild. With sound effects by Hollywood music maestro Hans Zimmer to boot. So far, so traditionally BMW. But from onboard movie streaming, colour-shifting interior trim linked to the car’s mood, mode and temperature and the ability to take selfies on the move the i5 is very much a car for our times. As Rory demonstrates, while it’s huge fun to drive yourself it’s also pretty capable at performing everyday manoeuvres like lane changes all on its own. A lot to take in, then. And a lot of car. But Rory is nothing if not thorough, and you’ll get to see all the many and varied ways the new i5 delivers on its considerable promise in this video. If you enjoyed it then make sure you hit like to let Rory know, join the conversation in the YouTube comments thread and, if you haven’t already, make sure you subscribe to the channel for more great content like this!
