The Vauxhall Meriva is roomy inside, has a big boot, and there’s a range of different seating options and some innovative touches to further boost its versatility. These touches aren’t as effective as you’d hope, though, and the Meriva is also disappointing on the road and expensive to buy and run.

The new Vauxhall Meriva is a five-seater family car with a difference thanks to its eye-catching rear-hinged “suicide” doors. Vauxhall claims this makes the Meriva more family-friendly, and invited Auto Trader to put this to the test, on a driving route which included a drive through Woburn Safari Park, in Buckinghamshire.

The Volkswagen Golf was the UK’s best selling car in February, outselling rivals such as the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Nissan Qashqai. In a market that was 7.7 per cent down on the same month last year, Volkswagen shifted 2,709 Golfs, while the second-placed car, the Vauxhall Corsa, sold 2,617 examples.
