• New camper van from Volkswagen
• Two diesel engines available
• Can be converted into a living area with a double bed

The new Volkswagen Caddy Camper van has been revealed this week, along with full specifications and prices.

From the outside, the Caddy Camper looks just like the standard Caddy van – although with windows. The front has echoes of the last-generation Golf family hatch to it – subtle and understated although the illusion doesn’t last long as the boxy rear makes itself apparent. This is, however, a vehicle built for practicality and spaciousness rather than style.

Under the bonnet, there is a choice of two four-cylinder diesel engines – a 1.6-litre, 100bhp unit and a 138bhp 2.0-litre motor. The first of these can manage 54.3mpg, while the latter can manage up to 49.6mpg. Power is fed to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG semi-automatic.

The real story is inside, however, with 1,600 litres of storage space with the rear seats up and 3,200 with them down. The space can either be just a 1.8 metre long load-space or it can be converted into a living area, complete with a double bed and privacy curtains for the windows. An awning can also be attached to the back of the camper to provide a covered outdoor area.

The VW Caddy Camper is available to order now and costs from £22,520.
