Having sold over a million examples so far VW’s flagship SUV is undergoing a refresh, with updated looks, improved technology and a new version of the range-topping Touareg R performance plug-in hybrid. This joins the existing line-up of petrol, diesel and hybrid models and adds a sporting edge to an upgraded line-up with models to suit all lifestyles.
And after an early glimpse of the updated Touareg the most obvious new features would seemingly comprise high-tech ‘HD Matrix’ headlights made up of thousands of micro LEDs able to create what VW calls an ‘interactive light carpet’ to take the stress and strain out of driving at night. At the back an illuminated VW logo on the rear tailgate with a full-width lighting strip above it are also sure to make this updated Touareg stands out.

The Touareg was already equipped with lots of advanced technology, but a thoroughly upgraded infotainment system looks much more seamlessly integrated into a modern, roomy looking cabin with improved interior material quality. This Innovision Cockpit assists a 15-inch central touch-screen that comes with enhanced with navigation, a high-resolution HD map data, voice control and wireless smartphone integration via a dedicated app. In combination with the fancy headlights the Infrared-based Night Vision assist system and head-up display should make night driving more comfortable, though it’s worth pointing out these are offered as optional features.
The Touareg R, meanwhile, is based on the eHybrid model and combines a 3.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined power output of 462 horsepower, an 80 horsepower hike over the standard hybrid. Uprated R-branded brakes, optional 21-inch wheels with high-performance tyres and the option of four-wheel steering add further capability and sporting potential. A first preview of the facelifted model will be showcased at the world Premiere in May, with orders open by the end of summer and on sale from the end of the year.
