Is the Land Rover Range Rover SUV a good car?

Words by: Erin Baker

"Finally, after delays caused by rethinking the battery and the general climate for electric-car sales, the electric version of the Range Rover is go. Was it worth the wait? I hope you won’t mind if I spoil the surprise but … yes. Everyone else is going to struggle to achieve the levels of refinement, off-roading capability and real-world range of such a luxurious, large SUV. Game-changer for electric? Also, yes. Range Rover has set a new benchmark."

Points for having zero tailpipe emissions. Points for being manufactured in the UK so no export emissions for UK drivers. Points for doing what they can to limit environmental damage, focus on battery efficiency and explore sustainable interior materials. But, in the end, we shouldn’t be making and driving three-tonne cars with 118kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries in them. End of. Maybe that’s why no section of the press pack was dedicated to sustainability information. It’s a shame. I’d like to know about low-carbon steel and aluminium, recycled parts, water management and welding.

Running costs for a Land Rover Range Rover

2/5

Happy days if you can buy or lease one of these as a company carwith the consequent Benefit in Kind breaks. Happier days still if you have a home charger with at least six hours of off-peak charging, though you’ll need days, not hours, to fill this baby up on a 7kW charger. We can’t imagine many owners will rely on the public-charging network: this sort of six-figure luxury SUV normally comes with a gravel driveway and stable-block with at least one beautiful Andersen charger. Other than that, it’s a very expensive car to buy and own, which is half the point. One wouldn’t want everyone driving one.

Reliability of a Land Rover Range Rover

3/5

The jury is firmly out but not remotely hopeful. We shall see. Land Rover has a fairly appalling reputation for reliability of hardware and software, and having its cars nicked. Add in permanent four-wheel-drive, and there’s still a bit to go wrong, although by replacing the engine, drivetrain and gearbox with a battery and motors a lot of the potential problems have been dispensed with. And, having put the battery unit to the test by wading through nearly a metre of water in a Scottish river I can confidently say the sealing is watertight.

Safety for a Land Rover Range Rover

4/5

Grip? Yes siree. Visibility? You got it. General sense of invincibility? Yes, yes, yes. Come snow, come rain, do your worst. This is the car for the Apocalypse. Also, school runs, trips to the supermarket, half-terms in Cornwall, picnics and towing. It still astounds me that a car with this much soft leather and cushioning on board can handle the rough stuff as well as, say, a Defender. But it can. It has all the pings and bongs you could want for staying in lane, not crashing into something or having something crash into you. But the best bit is that by holding down on button on the steering wheel, you can turn nearly all of it off. Peace at last. A star docked for taking away some buttons and replacing them with a touch-screen which, finally, the likes of Allianz and EuroNCAP are calling out on safety grounds for the fact they demand too much time with your eyes off the road.

How comfortable is the Land Rover Range Rover

5/5

My-oh-my. Night-night. That air suspension mixed with the lower centre of gravity makes for one hell of a pillow. And yet, select rock crawl and take it along a dry riverbed at 5mph and you’ll not have a filling out of place. The leg-room in the back is ridiculous. You can still choose a long-wheelbase version if you need to, but our First Edition version had pop-up foot rests, reclining seat backs and heated arm rests in the rear. Front occupants are not short-changed either, given you can have 24-way heated and cooled front seat with an optional hot-stone massage, madam. And the usual wireless charging and phone mirroring.

Features of the Land Rover Range Rover

4/5

Did I mention the lack of buttons? We no likey. But I do like the attention to detail that someone spending six figures should be rewarded with. For example, I can tell you the fake engine noise (stick with it – it’s unobtrusive and rather pleasing) is tuned to an F Major chord. Also, that the regenerative braking is dialled to a “chauffeur stop”, so if you let the car halt, it will do so in the manner of Jeeves.

I love the different materials, the wool blend, the wood finishes, the softest cream leather. It’s all deeply pleasant, deeply settling. There is a Warwick Acoustic audio system on the way at some point, which you might want to inquire about. Another game changer for the brand. Cup holders are big enough for the meaningful Land Rover water bottles you’ll want on your shoot, and the surfaces are streamlined. There’s air purification too and a fragrance diffuser if you really must. Other than that, see our review of the latest Range Rover for the fact customer clinics with people interested in the electric version came back with a request not to change a single thing, other than the engine.

Power for a Land Rover Range Rover

5/5

Totally incredible. Let’s start with off-roading. The instant torque from the battery/motor combo means you don’t need a low-range mode. So, the one-pedal setting used by electric-car drivers to slow down the car without the brake comes into great effect when you’re crawling wheel by wheel down a mountain in the mud. We waded through a fast-flowing river at the car’s maximum 90cm wading depth and we didn’t electrocute ourselves, so good news all round. Talk about building confidence into the product. On the road, it’s almost completely silent in the car. Personally I’d prefer a bit of something, because it was freaky. Like being in an insulated sound studio – I thought my ears were going to pop. But listen to me – first cars were too noisy, now they’re too quiet. Ignore me. It’s a bloody brilliant car, fast and delicate, with a usable range of about 330 miles, which we put to the test in the Highlands and found to be accurate. I want to go back and do it all again.
