Kia has come a long way in recent years. Once better known for making great value, reliable cars that put practicality before excitement, it has leapt into the electric era feet first to create quality EVs with ambitions to woo discerning buyers away from traditional premium marques. The standard Kia EV6 was our New Car of the Year 2023, popular with owners because it builds on Kia’s solid reputation and packages it into something more stylish. Here Rory takes the seriously uprated GT version of the EV6 for a spin to see whether increased power can make it even more desirable.
Although it might look a lot like the standard EV6 a few subtle differences hint at the EV6 GT’s significantly boosted performance. Inside and out there are lime green details, including large brake calipers and an teasingly big GT button on the steering wheel to unlock its extra zest. Rory finds out what happens when you press it and the EV6 GT takes on a whole new persona, unleashing its full 585 horsepower and going from 0-62mph in a hair-raising 3.5 seconds. That’s rapid, even in an era of fast accelerating electric models and enough to make rivals like the MG4 XPower seem a little sluggish. Having established that the EV6 GT is fun in a straight line and can leave Ferrari drivers looking embarrassed at the lights, Rory explores what the car might be like to live with. What else does the EV6 GT give you to keep you smiling? Rory highlights some of the clever features and debates whether the extra power is worth it, compared to the regular EV6.
