Originally launched as the E-Tron, Audi’s premium electric SUV has responded to the arrival of fresher rivals like the BMW iX and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV with a range of technical upgrades and a rebranding to align it with the broader Q8 range it is technically a part of. There is some logic here, given they are all based around the same vehicle. But, as Rory discovers, when the range includes internal combustion models with various levels of hybridisation Audi has got itself into a bit of a tangle, especially when you throw in the option of SUV or coupe-inspired Sportback derivatives into the bargain. Confused? You’re not alone, but let Rory explain and hopefully all will become clear!
While it may now share the Q8 badge this refreshed E-Tron version makes a clear visual statement about its zero-emissions electric power through revised looks, these including new styling at the front and rear with a sleeker representation of Audi’s logo on the grille. Under the skin the revisions are more significant, with two battery options both, of which are bigger than before to keep pace with rivals and offer significant improvements in both range and performance. Brace yourself for more confusing model naming but the 340 horsepower Q8 50 E-Tron with the smaller battery now has a best-case range of 281 miles (and slightly more for the sleeker Sportback version) while the 55 tested by Rory has 408 horsepower and a range of over 330 miles. The top of the range SQ8 version meanwhile trades range for performance, its triple-motor set-up delivering 503 horsepower and much more assertive acceleration, if that’s what you crave. These are just the foundations of course, and the new Q8 E-Tron builds on them with a huge range of updated tech, luxury and features. But we’ll let Rory talk you through those and explain what’s hot, and what’s not.
