Previously teased with details of its 6.5-litre V12 engine and triple-motor plug-in hybrid system, Lamborghini has confirmed its new super sports car will be called the Revuelto! And while this may represent the brand’s first steps into a relatively more socially conscious age the fans will be pleased to hear it’s still very much a Lamborghini, and one with a massively powerful petrol engine at its heart.
Just like the supercar icons of days gone by like the Miura, Countach, Diablo, Murcielago and – most recently – the Aventador the Revuelto is powered by a massive 12-cylinder petrol engine, and sets new standards in performance with its 2.5-second 0-62mph time and 217mph-plus top speed. Although it’s a plug-in hybrid as well Lamborghini doesn’t call it a PHEV, instead preferring HPEV, or High Performance Electrified Vehicle.
While the electric motors and battery can power the Revuelto for short distances on electric power alone in a nod to prevailing industry trends the reality is the motors are more about boosting performance from that already mighty petrol engine to a whole new level. With all systems go the full output is ¬¬¬1,015 horsepower, one of the three electric motors integrated into the new eight-speed, double-clutch automatic gearbox while the other two power the front wheels for a form of stabilising all-wheel drive when required. Make no mistake, though, with the bulk of the power going to the rear wheels this new Lamborghini promises to be as much of a white knuckle ride as its predecessors, the rawness and sound translated to the electrified era and, if anything, amplified further.
Built around an-new carbon fibre ‘monofuselage’ the Revuelto is lighter and stiffer than the Aventador, carbon fibre crash structures up front helping absorb big impacts better than the heavier metal ones they replace. Hopefully you’ll never need to test that theory, given the introduction of various driver assistance functions not before seen on a Lamborghini supercar. There’s also a total of 13 – yes, 13 – driver modes, including a zero emissions electric Città mode for purring around in total silence. Well, for as long as the battery lasts at least, that peace very swiftly shattered by the V12 firing up to charge it. There’s a ton more to learn about the Revuelto as well, not least how to pronounce the name! Check out Rory’s video for more on that, and don’t forget to hit like and then subscribe to be the first to see what this new beast is actually like to drive!
