Price category one: Best under £1000
What can you really expect from your new set of wheels if you only have a few hundred pounds to play with? In fact, the world is your oyster, but you need to choose wisely.

Well, we scoured the classifieds, and plumbed the depths of the Auto Trader website to bring you a few of the hidden gems that we think are worthy of your attention for this humble sum.

We were looking for cars that are not only a sound investment, and a steal for that money, and came up with three of the most interesting ways we think you should spend your money.

Each has its own merits, so once you’ve had a chance to look through the three films, vote for your favourite in the box below or in the comments box under the video in our YouTube channel.
Mercedes 190E

Our first contender is something of an icon. One of the last slab-sided saloons which earned Mercedes its reputation for unimpeachable build quality, the 190E is simple, reliable motoring at its best. Solid build quality, a smooth engine, and supple ride make it a brilliant daily driver. That's before you consider its motorsport heritage, and the brilliant 2.5 Cosworth.

Peugeot 406 Coupe

A French coupe with gorgeous Italian styling and graceful lines, it's hard not to fall for the Peugeot 406 Coupe. It was a proper Gran Tourer, with either a punchy petrol V6, or - breaking the mould at the time - a diesel engine with loads of torque. It handled well too, and was surprisingly practical. For less than £1000, can this French fancy win your heart?

Ford SportKa

Ford has a rich history of building hot hatches par excellence. The SportKa might be one of the smallest, and least powerful, but that doesn't stop this pocket rocket being a whole lot of fun to drive. Simple engineering, and a go-kart like chassis meant it handled with aplomb, but it's also a brilliant first car, as it's cheap to fix and insure. What's not to like?
