Poor Quality Merc
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 3.0 CDI Ambiente [Ex Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 26th April '12)
This is really an overpriced delivery van by virtue of adding leather seats and various other "luxury" items. Sadly, for a Mercedes, the build quality is very poor with flimsy plastic trim around seat levers, etc. Front suspension clonks are a regular feature, and there rarely seems to be a week go by without a warning light of some kind, though often it is a case of being re-set - at a cost !!
We own two of these, and since the warranties ran out some of the "big ticket" items replaced have included a new turbo at around 73,000 miles, and a steering rack at 79,000 miles. Most recently one of them (currently at 98,000 miles) has developed gearbox issues resulting in (another) small fortune going out on transmission fluid replacement, and computer re-sets, etc. The conclusion now - the problem is in the gearbox. The solution - replace it !!! Both vehicles have been dealer maintained from new.
Would I have another one ? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 2.2 CDI Ambiente [Ex Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 7th March '12)
This car is a very reliable car and has a spacious interior .my children absolutely loved driving in it because of the amount of room available for them.It also has an extra long buggage space for all the travelling needed.I am also very impressed with the fuel consumption ( it actuall consumed less than a 1.5 litre vehicle-jokes aside ). On the motorway it is a smooth drive and surely makes you feel epic .This is a car i would recommend for anyone with a large family or in airport transfer business.I use it mainly for family travels and i recommend it highly.
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 3.5 Ambiente [Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 5th December '11)
Reliable car, had one or 2 poblems with the front axle, but apart from that no issues.
Very spacious and comfortble.
Engine stong and powerful, no issues with this, although quite noisy and could do with a 6th gear.
Handles well and is fast for the size of it.
Overall very good and practicle car, although when the miliage gets near 100k, 1 or 2 things start to go wrong. Also quite expensive to run.
Easy comfortable ride totally reliable
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 2.2 CDI Ambiente [Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 31st July '11)
I get on average 28.6mpg most of the driving through country lanes. On a run I get about 36mpg. Cruses well and not tiring even when doing successive days of 250-300 miles.
Very comfortable for passengers, worth carrying a small step for older folk to climb in, at 34cm it is too high for my 91 year old Mum but a 17cm step fixed that.
Rear Air con a bit difficult for passengers to adjust if the seats are facing each other as I have it but it does mean they are not forever fiddling with it, and they don't need to once set it is fine.
It is a bit big for me on daily use on my own but touring with 6 of us is great.
Parking is easy, it is a nearly square box and easy to see the corners particularly using the electric mirrors turned down to see parking lines or kerbs.
Loads of room for luggage, I tour with 6 adults and all the luggage for two weeks and still have room between the backs of the from seats and the passenger seats for shopping.
I have had no reliability issues at all.
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 3.0 CDI Ambiente [Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 27th July '11)
This vehicle has been great, I've run Volkswagon Caravelles since 1994, but decided to give the Merc a go and I've not been displeased.
The only minus point has been the fuel economy being marginally less than that of the Caravelle, but a small price to pay I say, for the vastly superior engine, giving excellent performance and a smooth ride and still bringing in upto 30mpg!!!!
Seats are superb, the reclining rear seats always pleasing the family, adding to their comfort and how they arrived at the end of the journey.
A very good people carrier that has always satisfied.

Outstanding Performance and Value for Money
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 2.2 CDI Ambiente [Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 9th June '11)
I liked it so much that, we have bought another viano but unfortunatley with the new viano we have the road tax is higher this is still the lower rate as it was registered before a certain date. reliabilty has been outstanding a very presige vehicle can be used for almost anything from garden rubbish to taking VIP's. You cannot get tired whilst driving long distances with a viano, nor the passengers due to added features.
one to avoid, viano or mercedes?
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 3.0 CDI Ambiente [Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 11th May '11)
This is a fantastic car, really fast for its size, can manage 38 mpg but I rekon I could get it as low as 8 mpg if I tried. I usually amble along around the country lanes getting 24 mpg and towing twin axle caravan at 60 20 mpg. Now the downside, bought at 2.5 years old and 41000 miles starting with after 2 weeks air suspension fault, stabiliser link rods, 2 recalls, guide pulley for fan,new alternator, new glowplug and connector, crankshaft sensor, new sender unit,2 new drag links,2 new universals, both track rod ball joints, engine oil costs £130 for 8.5L, CD multichanger ceased to function 3 times, New suspension compressor, new pads and discs at 46000 miles, front engine idler replaced, new fan clutch, new battery at 3 years old, wrong tyres had been fitted so all replaced with commercial, MB tyre changer stripped paint from whole alloy rim, MB will not admit, New DPF and sensor Don't ask. Currently rear door rust MB will not repair, rear wiper motor flooded, washer bottle empties in 3 days, headlamp washer will not retract, front suspension clonk, nearly lost sun roof seal ( saw it in rear view mirror) Both DVD screens too heavy for roof lining, the lining sagging and almost obscuring the rear parking sensor, bubbling paint on road wheels. Now let me think, was there anything else ! Now 67000 miles.
Spacious, luxury family car with build problems
MERCEDES-BENZ VIANO 2.2 CDI Ambiente [Long] 5dr Tip Auto (Review date: 25th February '11)
This was purchased to accommodate 4 small children all of whom needed car seats at the time. It is a much better option than 7-seater estates or SUVs which often don't take 3 or 4 full child seats and rarely have any storage after the 7 seats are in position. It is probably one of the few family-friendly van based vehicles along with the VW Caravelle.
This was purchased second hand, and like many similar vehicles of this type was probably an ex-taxi/limo. This may have contributed to the frequent issues that have arisen but overall the reliability is not satisfactory for the age and supposed Mercedes reputation. Problems include air suspension failures, brake sensor malfunctions, fuel and oil leaks.
In general, build quality aside, the 2.2 Diesel engine and automatic gearbox are surprisingly responsive and driving around town is OK and on longer trips is quite comfortable. Turning circle is large and parking sensors are almost obligatory.
Running costs are as expected for such a large car but not all garages (including Mercedes) will service the Viano range. A good example would be highly recommended but unfortunately those seem to be in the minority.
