New Vauxhall Astra: first picture
09 April 2009
A picture of the new Vauxhall Astra has been leaked online.
A source at Vauxhall confirmed the image is an accurate representation of the new model which will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The picture shows the Opel-branded five-door Astra’s design is heavily influenced by the Insignia saloon.
The new Astra will be going on sale later this year and will go up against the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf and Honda Civic in the highly-competitive family hatchback sector.
Vauxhall’s fifth generation Astra will replace the current model, which has been on sale since 2004 and is the UK’s fourth biggest selling car.
The three-door version is likely to carry the name ‘Sport Hatch’ as the current Astra is.
Estate and VXR hot hatch variants are expected to follow, the latter potentially using the 2-litre, 220bhp engine from the Insignia.
