Ultima GTR smashes Top Gear lap record
30 October 2007
The British-built Ultima GTR has blitzed Top Gear’s test track – setting the fastest time ever recorded by a production car. But the lightweight sportscar won’t be heading up the Top Gear leaderboard, as the GTR’s run wasn’t an official test for the BBC show. The spectacular 720bhp Ultima GTR lit up the Dunsfold test track and set a time of 1m 12.8s – more than four seconds faster than the current leader of the board, the Koenigsegg CCX, which managed it in 1m 17.6s. Sadly, because Top Gear’s tame racing driver wasn’t behind the wheel, the run won’t count as an official Top Gear power lap. The two-mile long stretch located within the former Dunsfold Aerodrome is home to Top Gear’s test track and was designed by engineers from Lotus. Dunsfold Aerodrome was previously used by British Aerospace to flight test aircraft including the Harrier Jump Jet – which also appeared on an episode of Top Gear, storming through the track in just over 30 seconds. And while Dunsfold may no longer be home to the The GTR can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 2.6 seconds and rockets from standstill to 100mph and back to zero in just 9.4 seconds. And its time of 1m 12.8s has eclipsed such supercar aristocracy as the Ferrari Enzo, Pagani Zonda F, and the Porsche Carrera GT. But don’t think the GTR is all about mind-blowing performance – inside the race-track special, Ultima has fitted air-conditioning, a stereo, and leather upholstery. Check back tomorrow for Adrian Hearn’s Videos of the Week special on the Ultima GTR. Auto Trader links Top Gear news Top Gear features | ||
