Launched in 1985 as a Group B rally car, Porsche sent the 959 to one of the most gruelling motorsport challenges in the world – the 8,600 mile Dakar Rally. In the 1985 rally the Porsche struggled, but the following year it claimed first and second place – earning itself a place in the history books. In 1986 a production model was built with the four-wheel drive Porsche 959 rocketing from 0-60mph in a startling-quick 3.6 seconds and running on to a top speed of 198mph – supercar numbers by 2008 standards.
