The new Vauxhall Insignia will be available with an innovative camera which automatically recognises the speed limit of the road it’s on.

As a replacement for the Vectra, the Vauxhall Insignia’s dual-function camera will display the speed limit and whether you’re allowed to overtake on an instrument panel between the speedo and rev counter.

Depending on light conditions, the Vauxhall Insignia’s Traffic Sign Recognition function will repeatedly read signs up to 100 metres away by focussing on circular patterns and identifying the shape of the numbers.

The Vauxhall Insignia will also feature a lane detection warning system which will beep and flash at the driver if they deviate from their lane.

However, while the Insignia will hit forecourts in the autumn, the camera will only be available as an option early next year.

The first images of the Vauxhall Insignia were revealed in April with the family saloon replacing the reps’, the Vectra.

On sale towards the end of October, the Vauxhall Insignia will face tough competition from the likes of the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord.

While full details are scant, the Insignia will feature five engines at launch, with three petrol engines ranging from 140bhp to 260bhp and two diesels with 130bhp and 160bhp.

And for the first time since the Cavalier of the Nineties, the Insignia will have a four-wheel drive flagship model.

The Vauxhall Insignia will make its world debut at next month’s British Motor Show.

We’ll be reporting live from the ExCeL-based show on London’s Docklands so don’t forget to come back for all the big news as it happens.
