Official details: BMW 5 Series GT
13 February 2009
This is the BMW 5 Series GT Concept – a new niche model which will make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
The new BMW 5 Series GT appears to have taken styling cues from across the BMW range, including a large kidney grille front, X6-style coupe crossover profile and 7 Series interior.
Initially codenamed the PAS – Progressive Activity Sedan – the four-seat 5 Series GT will have a boot capacity ranging from 430-litres – 1,650-litres with a twin-tailgate for flexible storage use.
And it’s big – measuring 4,998mm in length and 2,129 width-ways, only the 7 Series is a longer BMW.
While only a concept, it’s highly likely the 5 Series GT will see production and BMW says it will be aimed at customers who want the luxury of a 7 Series with the practicality of an SUV.
The GT also features frameless doors and a panoramic roof.
There are no details on engines on the production model, but expect the 5 Series GT to be available with BMW’s brilliant twin-turbocharged 3-litre diesel.
We’d anticipate the 5 Series GT will be rear-wheel drive but the idea of an all-wheel drive version using BMW’s xDrive technology and the 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine from the X6 is a mouth-watering prospect.
The 5 Series GT Concept will make its official world debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
We’ll be reporting live from the event so don’t forget to come back for all the news and pictures from Switzerland.
Goodbye or good riddance to BMW's Chris Bangle?
