Nissan GT-R blitzes Nürburgring in record time
01 May 2008 The Nissan GT-R has lapped the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany in a record time of seven minutes 29 seconds – beating the Bugatti Veyron by 11 seconds. The new Nissan GT-R – which will hit UK shores in 2009 – blitzed the legendary Nürburgring track shaving off a full nine seconds from its previous record of seven minutes 38 seconds. And the seven minutes 29 seconds posted by the standard spec Nissan GT-R makes it one of the fastest production cars ever to lap the challenging Nürburgring track. View more images of the Nissan GT-R Test driver Tochio Suzuki – who posted the GT-R’s original time of seven minutes 38 seconds – was determined to beat his previous record. Kazutoshi Mizuno, chief engineer for the GT-R, said: “At last year’s testing, we were very frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring.” The earlier record lap time was posted despite the track being slightly damp on two corners. Mizuno added: “The GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime, and anywhere.” And Nissan shocked the supercar world when it announced the GT-R will cost £52,900 when it reaches the UK next year. This makes the Nissan GT-R nearly half the price of its main competitor, the £97,840 Porsche 911 Turbo, and cheaper than the all-new V8-powered BMW M3. Read our review of the new BMW M3 The Nissan GT-R is fitted with a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 engine producing 473bhp, mated to Nissan’s four-wheel-drive system. This means the GT-R can accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds – as quick as the £800,000 Lamborghini Reventon – and tops out at 195mph. The Nissan GT-R was launched in Japan in December 2007, and will hit UK shores in early 2009. |
