Michael Jackson's Rolls-Royce for sale
17 February 2009
A 500bhp tour-bus, Harley Davidson motorcycle and a fully customised Rolls-Royce limousine? Vijay Pattni looks at one of the hottest auctions in history.
He recorded the biggest selling album of all time, commissioned a 2,700 acre theme park named ‘Neverland’…and is one of the world’s most recognisable names.
And now, an auction house is offering up personal items previously owned by the self-proclaimed ‘King of Pop’ Mr Michael Jackson.
Julien’s Auctions – which has previously dealt in The Beatles memorabilia – is hosting a seven-day Californian extravaganza in April auctioning off sculptures, art, games and cars from “the life and career of Michael Jackson”. A career which has seen him become one of the world’s most famous people.
I want you back
Michael Jackson started out as the youngest member of the Jackson 5 – a five-piece family band managed by their father.
Marking himself from his brothers using his incredible singing voice, Michael quickly became the star attraction, and soon began forging out his super-successful solo career.
From the late 1970s right through to the 1980s, Jacko climbed the pop ladder to emerge as the biggest selling artist of his generation, making hit albums Off The Wall, Bad, and Thriller – an album which today still stands as the biggest selling album of all time.
The King of Pop also commissioned a 2,700 acre theme park called ‘Neverland’, named after Peter Pan’s magical island where nobody ever grows old, and Jacko filled it with “larger-than-life” superheroes, 19th century paintings and sculpture, a custom horse-drawn carriage, his iconic concert costumes…and his cars.
Thriller
Michael has a number of cars included in the auction, including his old 1999 Rolls Royce Silver Seraph limousine with a 24 carat gold interior designed by Jackson himself.
His gold ‘embellishments’ add to the Connelly leather and walnut, as well as a television set.
Michael’s old Rolls Royce limousine is fitted with a 322bhp 5.4-litre V12 engine made from aluminium alloy, and is expected to fetch around £100,000.
Speed Demon
How about Michael’s old Harley Davidson motorcycle?
“You can never go wrong,” explains Darren Julien, CEO of Julien’s Auctions, “owning a Harley, especially one coming from the collection of Michael Jackson.”
Outfitted in police livery complete with lights, this 2001 ‘FLHPEI’ model has and a fuel injected twin 2-cylinder engine, and is expected to fetch around £5,000.
Michael’s old tour bus is also being offered up for sale, and is estimated to fetch upwards of £40,000.
The 1997 ‘Neoplan’ tour bus includes leather sofas and recliners, granite surfaces, a full-sized shower stall, kitchen, intercom system and an upgraded audio-video system including a large, flat-panel television.
And underneath the custom tour bus sits a 500bhp engine…
“This is your opportunity” explains Darren, “to travel in the style of Michael Jackson the way he and his friends did to many concerts and various events.”
I’m Bad
Michael was also the owner of a unique Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60, complete with a V8 engine and 230bhp.
The unique thing about this particular Caddy is its star ranking – it was driven by The Dark Knight star Morgan Freeman in 1989’s Oscar winner Driving Miss Daisy. It is expected to fetch upwards of £20,000.
And Michael’s other motor up for auction is as unique as Neverland itself.
“Always a congenial host”, explains Darren, “Michael was a stickler when it came to the safety of his guests, making sure he was prepared for anything.”
And to that end, Michael had a 1986 GMC High Sierra 3500 Truck converted into a fire engine by ‘Emergency One’.
It comes with a six-cylinder engine, firefighter gear, hoses and ladders, and is custom painted for its duties at Neverland. Estimated to fetch around £5,000.
