Top Gear is now in its 11th series

23 June 2008

Top Gear is back! Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig return for a new series of high-octane tyre-shredding mayhem.

As Top Gear returns for its 11th season, Vijay Pattni rounds up all the cars – including an Austin Allegro – from last night’s episode.

The first episode of Top Gear Season 11 saw a supercar fuel-challenge shoot-out, a record-breaking Austin Allegro, the Ferrari F430 Scuderia and three used cars for the police car challenge.

Austin Allegro

James May introduces the newest member of the Top Gear team – the Top Gear Stuntman – and announces his daring maiden challenge: to jump over a series of cars in an Austin Allegro. In reverse.

The Austin flies off a specially constructed ramp backwards over the assembled scrap cars, but fails to complete the hurdle.

“That was a little bit short”, concluded James.

Aston Martin DBS

The first road-test feature of the new series features five of the world’s hottest supercars – including the Aston Martin DBS – in an adrenaline-charged endurance race around the Top Gear track with just one gallon of fuel each.

The Aston limped home in fourth place, bowing out after the Ferrari 599.

Audi R8

One of the world’s hottest sportscars, the Audi R8 won the supercar shoot-out in the first road-test feature of brand new Top Gear.

With all five supercars filled up with just one gallon of fuel, the Audi R8 lasted the longest around the Top Gear test track, returning 5mpg.

BMW M3 saloon

Jeremy Clarkson set out to find out which is the more economical car around the Top Gear test track – the Toyota Prius or the BMW M3.

The challenge was to lap the track ten times over and see which one returned the most. The BMW M3 managed an astonishing 19.4mpg – 2.2mpg more than the Prius.

BMW 5 Series

The trio set out to find an alternative second-hand police car and had to outrun The Stig – who was in a 1990s BMW 5 Series.

Ferrari F430 Scuderia

Jeremy Clarkson thinks new Ferraris are fantastically engineered cars which are amazing to drive – but not so much fun to drive.

Not so the Ferrari F430 Scuderia – which Clarkson says is like “driving a proper Ferrari again.”

Ferrari 599

The first car to bow out of the one-gallon fuel challenge, the Ferrari 599 spluttered out of the action-packed race, returning just 1.7mpg.

Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo

Jeremy, Richard and James set out with £1,000 in their hands and came back with three used cars – which would act as police cars.

Jeremy chose the Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo fitted with the Italian police livery and metal ‘Bodicia’-style blades on the rear wheels, which came off when Jeremy tried to ram The Stig off road.

And when Jezza tried to beat The Stig’s time set in a Vauxhall Astra, he recorded a time of two minutes and eight seconds.

Lamborghini Murcielago

The hot Lamborghini Murcielago was the supercar driven by Jeremy, in the race to find out which dream machine would return the best fuel economy around the Top Gear test track.

The Lambo outran the Aston, McLaren and Ferrari to come 2nd, before spluttering to the side of the road, returning 4.1mpg.

As Jeremy exclaimed: “That is the sound of money… exploding!”

Lexus LS

James May’s second-hand-police-car-for-less-than-£1,000 was an old Lexus – which barely had enough power to outrun The Stig in a BMW 5 Series.

James’ Lexus had his straight-talking mission statement on the side: “Rozzers… catching crims and locking them up in your community.”

And while trying to beat The Stig’s time around the track, James said: “I hope you like prison food, crims!”

He managed a time of two minutes and three seconds – 17 seconds slower than The Stig.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

The ultimate marriage of Mercedes and McLaren resulted in this 636bhp bruiser – the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

The McLaren finished 3rd in the first challenge to see which supercar could last the longest around the Top Gear track on just one gallon of fuel.

Suzuki Vitara

With James and Jeremy trading insults over each other’s Lexus and Fiat for the used police car challenge, Richard Hammond pulled up in a car to silence them all – a white Suzuki Vitara with pink lettering on the doors.

Richard equipped his Vitara with five sets of police lights and a rolled up tyre-puncturing ‘Stinger’ – which fell apart as soon as he deployed it.

Toyota Prius

The Prius has been lauded as one of the world’s most efficient cars, using a combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a battery – but how would it fare against a BMW M3 saloon around the Top Gear track.

The challenge was set – both the M3 and the Prius had to lap the track ten times – and the Prius recorded 17.2mpg – 2.2mpg less than the M3.

Vauxhall Astra

In the used police car challenge, The Stig had to set a benchmark time around the Top Gear test track which the other cars would be measured against.

And The Stig’s chosen steed? A standard police-liveried diesel Vauxhall Astra.

The Stig posted a lap time of one minute 48 seconds, which Jeremy remarked as being “faster than most of our celebrities in the Chevrolet Lacetti!”
