A 21-year-old chef today admitted causing an estimated £30,000 damage to a Ferrari Enzo belonging to Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay.

Aaron Billington admitted causing criminal damage to the sports car outside a hotel in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, where the star had been staying.

Lowestoft Magistrates' Court heard Billington committed the crime in a "moment of madness" after becoming upset by "offensive" remarks the singer made.

Robert Barnwell, prosecuting, said: "During the evening, witnesses in the case had been socialising with staff from the hotel.

"One witness describes the defendant as being arrogant towards Mr Kay. He later admitted in interview to drinking a bottle of vodka and being drunk prior to the incident.

"Another describes him as being more aggressive as the evening went on. They also say that Mr Kay appeared to not want to speak to him."

Mr Barnwell told the court that the singer and two other people witnessed the Ferrari being damaged from the star's hotel room.

He said Billington was seen "using swinging motions with his arms" as he threw stones at the car, shattering the windscreen and smashing the driver's side window.

During a police interview, Billington admitted causing the damage.

"He said he knew whose vehicle it was and stated that he had fallen out with Mr Kay," said Mr Barnwell.

The court was told the exact value of the damage to the £1 million sports car was not known but estimates had suggested it amounted to £30,000.

Damien Moore, mitigating, said: "I dealt with Mr Billington yesterday when he was under arrest at the police station. One of the first questions I had for Mr Billington was: why?"

Mr Billington explained that he had been "sparked into a fit of anger" by the singer on Monday night - and caused the damage in the early hours of the following day, Mr Moore said.

"On this particular evening it was his night off," said Mr Moore. "He was socialising with people, which included the complainant and others, and he says that, as the evening progressed, the complainant began making some comments which Mr Billington found to be deeply offensive.

"And he says that, because of the comments that were being made, he felt that there was an element of provocation which sparked him, essentially, into a fit of anger.

"In a moment of utter madness, he accepted that he caused the damage to the complainant's car."

The court heard Billington, who had no previous convictions, was emotional during police interviews but had co-operated fully.

"In the cold light of day - and with the benefit of hindsight - he accepts that he acted totally inappropriately and, no matter what comments were made that night which he found offensive, he knows that he should not have acted in the way that he did," said Mr Moore.

He added: "Something must have triggered him to act in the way he did."

Magistrates' chairwoman June Hutson said the case would be committed to Ipswich Crown Court for sentence at a later date.

Billington was released on bail and made no comment to waiting journalists as he left court.

Jay Kay, 39, whose name in court was given as Jason Kay, said yesterday that he found the incident "disappointing".

"It's disappointing - that's all I'll say," he said. "It says something about the British psyche."

He also joked: "It's probably the first incident in Aldeburgh for about 60 years."

The singer had been staying at the three-star seafront Brudenell Hotel.

On its website, the £140-a-night hotel is described as a "haven of peace and relaxation".

Multi-million album selling musician Jay Kay is one of music's biggest petrolheads, owning an enormous collection of automotive exotica.

Among his supercar fleet is a Ferrari F40, Ferrari 50 and a selection of classic cars but his Enzo - which is worth around £1 million - is arguably his best driving toy.

With a 6-litre V12 engine, the Enzo will accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.65 seconds before reaching a top speed of 218mph - making it the fastest production Ferrari ever.

Just 399 Enzos were ever built between 2002 and 2004 because Ferrari believed the demand for the hypercar was 400, making it all-the-more exclusive.

Jay Kay is currently Top Gear’s fastest Star in a Reasonably Priced Car after he knocked off Simon Cowell with a time of 1 minute 45.83 seconds.

A 21-year-old man will appear in court today accused of damaging Jay Kay's Ferrari Enzo.
