Honda Civic

Honda’s Civic was originally released in 1973, but the best models for your money now are the Mk4 and Mk5 Civic.

These reliable hatchbacks offer much more space than other bargain first cars and the 1.6-litre engines provide enough bite for overtaking. The wild Type-R models will bust the £1,000 budget as well as the bank when insuring one as a first car.

SEAT Ibiza

The first generation Ibiza came in three-door and five-door hatchback forms, and the 1985-1993 models are cheap and cheerful.

The sexier-looking Mk2 was produced between 1993 and 2002, and received a facelift in 1999. The Ibiza's 1-litre to 1.8-litre petrol and 1.9-litre diesel engines provide plenty of variety, but look out for the Cupra hot hatch if you want more power.
