The Fiat 500 Abarth is set to impress at this year’s Geneva motor show

26 February 2008

The Geneva motor show is almost upon us, and with it comes a catalogue of new cars, from the Ford Fiesta to a special edition Bugatti Veyron.

We take a look at the cars you can’t afford to miss at this year’s show.

Fiat 500 Abarth

If you found the new Fiat 500 a little too cute for your liking, then the sportier Abarth might change your mind.

Changes include a larger intake on the front bumper, reworked fog lamps, wider wheel arches and a lowered ride height. And with a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine producing 135bhp, it’ll be able to reach 0-60mph in just eight seconds.

Bugatti Veyron special edition

Bugatti have teamed up with Hermes, the Parisian-based saddle maker, to produce a brand new special edition of the awesome Veyron.

It’s likely this version of the Bugatti Veyron will include a redesigned interior and some minor changes to its appearance, but the engine and performance figures looks likely to remain the same.

The current Bugatti Veyron goes from 0-62 in 2.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 253mph.

Ford Fiesta

Ford’s futuristic new Fiesta is set to impress at this year’s Geneva motor show with its stylish curves and radically redesigned interior.

Its curved styling is inspired by the Verve Concept cars which were shown at last year’s Frankfurt motor show.

New features will include MP3 and Bluetooth dashboard connections – with voice-activated audio, improved steering, and a revised cabin for quieter road noise.

Audi A4 Avant

Audi’s scorching new A4 Avant will make its official debut in Geneva, with several improvements over its predecessor.

With a 490-litre capacity, the A4 Avant boasts the biggest boot load in its class, which extends to an impressive 1,430-litres when the rear seats are folded down.

Maserati GranTurismo S

It’s been a year since Maserati showcased their original GranTurismo, and now its back with the world premiere of the sleek GranTurismo S.

Its power stems from a 4.7-litre engine which produces 440bhp – and this ferocity is backed up with a new high-performance brake system, similar to the iron and aluminium dual-cast brakes on the Quattroporte Sport.

Ford Kuga

Ford’s answer to the compact SUV motorist comes in the form of the Ford Kuga – a vehicle we spotted in public before its official debut next month.

Despite its size, the Ford Kuga has an average fuel consumption rate of more than 44mpg, and emits just 169g/km of CO2. This makes it the best in its class, with an annual tax cost of just £165 per year.

Land Rover LRX

The Geneva motor show sees the European debut of the stunning Land Rover LRX concept. It’s lower and sleeker than the Freelander (on which it’s based), and features many ultra-modern styling cues.

Power comes from a 2-litre diesel hybrid engine, and if the car does end up being mass-produced it will be one of the cleanest vehicles in its class.

Toyota IQ

Toyota’s city car may be small, but it’s one of the most important at Geneva. And small is the operative word – the car is 425mm shorter than the Toyota Aygo.

The Toyota IQ has three seats and we expect its engine to be 1-litre or less. Its funky styling and low cost of around £8,500 could make it a hit.

Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe

A new model has been added to the prestigious Rolls Royce Phantom series, featuring a modified appearance and dramatic changes to its performance.

The Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe runs on a 6.75-litre V12 engine which produces 453 bhp – and boasts a 25 per cent increase in fuel capacity over the Drophead Coupé. Production begins this summer.

Saab 9-1 X

For the first time, Saab looks poised to enter into the hotly-fought hatchback market.

So far the manufacturer has only released teaser pictures of the 9-1, but it looks like the car could be a contender to the premium BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Volvo C30 hatches.

Alfa Romeo 8C

Alfa Romeos are notoriously good-looking, and now the carmaker has taken design to the next level with the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider supercar.

And it should drive as well as it looks, with a 4.7-litre V8 engine producing 450bhp, feeding power to its wide rear-wheels.

Honda Accord Tourer

Honda has taken the Accord upmarket, and looks set to take on the might of the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat with its new estate.

Its main features are a newly designed diesel engine and a more luxurious and advanced interior.

KTM X-Bow

With a carbon fibre exterior, just 700kg in weight and a six-gear or double-clutch gearbox, the KTM X-Bow looks more like a kart than a car.

But it’s designed for speed, and its 2-litre engine delivers 220bhp and takes the car from 0-60mph in around four seconds.

Austrian Motorcycle manufacturer KTM revealed its original X-Bow at last year’s show, and now they’re back with a production run of 100 special edition Dallara Series.

Volkswagen Scirocco

Volkswagen look set to unveil the long awaited Scirocco coupe at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Roughly the size of the Volkswagen Golf, the car is expected to have a more sporty design.

If the car goes on sale to the public, it will benefit from Volkswagen’s latest engine line-up, including its economical, but powerful, 1.4-litre Twincharger engine.
