All-new Toyota Prius makes debut in Detroit
Di Caprio, Diaz and the rest of Hollywood’s green team will be pleased – the third generation Toyota Prius has been unveiled at Detroit.
Details on the new Prius are scant, but Toyota says it will have a new 1.8-litre petrol engine while the battery powertrain has been comprehensively re-engineered with reductions in weight and size.
The Prius will be built on an entirely new platform for sharper handling while Toyota claims the car’s drag coefficient will be the ‘lowest of any mass produced car in the world’.
With the weight loss and improved aerodynamics, the Prius should be considerably greener than the current model which currently emits 104g/km of carbon dioxide and boasts a claimed average of 65.7mpg.
However, many have found these claimed fuel economy figures to be very ambitious with Auto Trader averaging between 45 and 55mpg.
Since its launch in 2000, the Prius has been the world’s most successful hybrid car with more than 1 million finding homes.
The third generation Toyota Prius will go on sale in the UK in the summer with prices and full specifications to be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
