The Mazda 2 supermini which scooped the World Car of the Year award is now available as a three-door, with sporty looks and a lower price starting from £7,999.

Five new Mazda 2 models join the current range – a 1.3-litre TS petrol, 1.3-litre TS2 petrol, 1.5-litre Sport petrol, 1.4-litre TS diesel and 1.4-litre TS2 diesel.

When introduced in September last year the Mazda 2 was praised for its lightweight design, shedding 100kg over the previous Mazda 2.

The new three-door models are even lighter, and Mazda claims this will make performance and economy even better.

The 1.3-litre TS has 75bhp, and the TS2 with the same engine gets 86bhp while still emitting the same 129g/km of carbon dioxide. They sprint from 0-62mph in 14 and 12.9 seconds respectively.

And the petrol Mazda 2 TS2 model isn’t just faster than the TS, it also features 15-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured door mirrors and handles, side and curtain airbags, upgraded stereo, leather covered steering wheel and gear lever, split rear seats and air conditioning as standard.

The range-topping 1.5-litre Sport has 102bhp and is the fastest Mazda 2 in the range,  accelerating from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 117mph.

The Mazda 2 1.5 Sport improves on the TS2 specification with chunkier 16-inch alloy wheels, sports styling kit, front fog lights, automatic lights and wipers, climate control, trip computer, dynamic stability control, traction control, cruise control and an upgraded stereo.

Buy the 1.4-litre diesel TS or TS2 Mazda 2 and emissions and fuel consumption are the lowest in the range – with combined fuel consumption averaging 65.7mpg and emissions of 114g/km – placing it in £35 tax band B.

The 1.3-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel Mazda 2 three-door models are on sale now, with the 1.5-litre Sport joining them in July with prices ranging from £7,999 for the 1.3-litre TS to £11,399 for the 1.5-litre Sport - £750 less than the five-door model.

The Mazda 2 was recently voted World Car of the Year ahead of the Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R. Have your say on the Auto Trader blog.
