The 2008 British Motor Show kicked off on Tuesday with five important world debuts.

On the Ford stand was the 2009 Ford Focus RS, a hardcore 296bhp front-wheel drive hot hatch which looks to take the fight to the four-wheel drive Subaru Impreza and Volkswagen Golf R32.

Overshadowed by the Ford Focus but equally impressive was theRenault Megane Renaultsport R26.R, a stripped-out track-focussed version of the standard Megane R26. While power hasn't been increased, handling and performance has been optimised with the slashing of more than 120kg and the introduction of a firmer suspension and uprated brakes.

Other important debuts included the Vauxhall Insignia, the mid-sized family saloon which replaces the Vectra when it goes on sale in December.

The first all-new Lotus in 13 years, the Lotus Evora also made its first public showing.
