BMW has announced it will produce the sensational-looking Gran Turismo CS concept.

The sexily-styled four-door saloon is set for a 2012 launch and will wade into battle against Mercedes’ CLS, Maserati Quattroporte and the forthcoming Porsche Panamera.

Controversial styling guru Chris Bangle oversaw the design of the stunning CS which marks an evolution of his famous ‘flame-surface’ design, while the shark-nosed front is clearly reminiscent of the 1950s BMW 507.

First previewed at the Shanghai motor show in April, rumours suggest the new low-slung saloon will house a 700bhp V12 engine propelling the 5.1-metre long CS from 0-60mph in less than five seconds.

Buyers can expect a top speed in excess of 180mph.

Speaking in Munich yesterday afternoon, BMW Group Chairman Norbert Reithofer also confirmed that the German carmaker will put into production a baby Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) – the X1 – building on the success of the X5 and newly restyled X3.

The new baby BMW will compete against rivals such as Toyota’s RAV4 and the exciting new Ford Kuga. Expect the full range of current 1-Series engines to complement the four-wheel drive SAV.

The Munich manufacturer is adding to the burgeoning Mini range too – by introducing an SAV version.

However, this will not be produced at the company’s Oxford base but will be outsourced to Europe.

Reithofer said: “The BMW X1 is going to complement the successful X family, together with the BMW Concept X6 presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show.”
