Top Gear’s Clarkson rapped over gay jibe
21 May 2007
Jeremy Clarkson has been criticised for using offensive language. Media watchdog Ofcom claimed the Top Gear star should not have described a car as “very ginger beer”. Ginger beer is cockney rhyming slang for queer – which is slang for homosexual. Clarkson made the comment while discussing the Daihatsu Copen, a two seater sports car. An Ofcom spokesman said “there was no justification for using the word in this way.” However, they offered no criticism of Clarkson’s comment the car was “a bit gay” on the basis gay can mean foolish or stupid. Ofcom said the BBC had already warned the production team and producers not to repeat the offence. Clarkson is famous for his outspoken views and recently offended the Malaysian government when he described the Perodua Kelisa as one of the world’s worst cars.
